Prince Gong established the Zongli Yamen as the Qing’s central office to manage diplomacy and treaty-power relations—an institutional cornerstone of early Tongzhi-era statecraft and reform efforts.
The death of the Xianfeng Emperor created a succession crisis: his young son Zaichun inherited the throne, setting the stage for a regency dominated by court factions and, ultimately, by the two empress dowagers.
Empress Dowagers Cixi and Ci’an, allied with Prince Gong, ousted the group of eight regents. The coup consolidated regency power and opened political space for the Tongzhi Restoration and Self-Strengthening policies.
Zaichun formally began his reign as the Tongzhi Emperor, ruling as a child under regency. His reign later became associated with a brief effort to stabilize Qing rule after mid-century crises.

The Qing capture of Nanjing ended the Taiping regime as a major political-military threat. Victory strengthened regional Qing commanders and provided momentum for Tongzhi-era reconstruction and reforms.
In the early-to-mid 1860s, Qing leaders promoted restorationist governance alongside selective adoption of Western technology and methods—often summarized as the Tongzhi Restoration and the Self-Strengthening Movement.
With major Taiping forces defeated, the Qing concentrated on crushing the Nian Rebellion in north China. Its suppression reduced one of the dynasty’s last major mid-century internal wars during Tongzhi’s reign.
A violent anti-Christian riot in Tianjin killed the French consul and others, nearly triggering international conflict. The incident strained Qing–treaty-power relations during the Tongzhi era.
Tongzhi married Empress Xiaozheyi (Alute clan). The marriage was a major court event and preceded renewed tensions over when the emperor would end the regency and rule personally.
The Tongzhi Emperor formally took up personal rule, ending the planned regency period of Empress Dowagers Cixi and Ci’an (though both retained substantial political influence).
After disputes over protocol (including refusal to perform the kowtow), Western diplomats were received by the emperor—an important symbolic step in Qing diplomatic practice under treaty-power pressure.
Tongzhi died at age 18, ending his short personal rule and triggering a succession decision by the court. Many accounts identify smallpox as the cause of death; his passing paved the way for the Guangxu Emperor’s selection.
