After years in hiding under the protection of Gilan’s ruler, Ismail emerged in 1499 and began mobilizing Qizilbash tribal support, setting the stage for the Safavid bid to replace Aq Qoyunlu authority in western Iran.
Ismail’s first major campaign targeted Shirvan; between December 1500 and 1501 his forces defeated the Shirvanshah Farrukh Yassar and dismantled long-standing Shirvan autonomy, providing momentum and resources for further expansion.
Ismail’s army defeated Aq Qoyunlu ruler Alvand at the Battle of Sharur, breaking Aq Qoyunlu power in Azerbaijan and opening the route to Tabriz.
After taking Tabriz, Ismail proclaimed himself shah, inaugurating Safavid political rule; he also had coins struck in his name and made Tabriz his capital, formalizing the new dynasty’s state framework.
Ismail decreed Twelver Shiʿism as the official faith of the realm, giving the Safavid state a powerful ideological foundation and reshaping Iran’s religious landscape for the long term.
Ismail’s forces took Baghdad in October 1508, extending Safavid authority into Iraq and further displacing remaining Aq Qoyunlu positions in the west.
At the Battle of Merv, Ismail defeated the Uzbek leader Muhammad Shaybani Khan, enabling Safavid reassertion of control over Khorasan and strengthening the dynasty’s eastern frontier.
A small but notable border encounter with the Mamluk Sultanate occurred at Diyarbakır in April 1511, reflecting the Safavids’ growing entanglement with neighboring great powers while consolidating their rule.
The Battle of Chaldiran was a major Safavid setback: Ottoman firearms and tactics routed Ismail’s army, halting westward Safavid expansion and demonstrating the strategic consequences of gunpowder warfare.
Following Chaldiran, Selim I entered Tabriz on 6 September 1514; the occupation was brief but traumatic, including seizure of the Safavid camp and deportation of artisans, before Ottoman withdrawal later that month.
After Ottoman logistics and unrest forced Selim I to leave Azerbaijan, Ismail returned and re-entered Tabriz in September 1514, restoring Safavid control of the capital despite the strategic loss of initiative.
Ismail died on 23 May 1524, ending the founding ruler’s reign; his son Tahmasp I succeeded him, inheriting a centralized but faction-prone polity shaped by early conquests and the shock of Chaldiran.
