After a period of internal instability under Mohammad Khodabanda, Abbas I was installed as shah, beginning a reign that would centralize authority and remake Safavid governance and the military.
Abbas accepted the Treaty of Constantinople (also called the Peace of Istanbul / Ferhad Pasha Treaty), ending the 1578–1590 war but ceding major territories in the Caucasus and northwest Iran—time he used to stabilize the state before counterattacking later.
A major phase of Abbas’s urban program in Isfahan began with construction of the Čahārbāḡ promenade, a planned ceremonial and residential axis that helped organize the city’s new royal precinct and elite neighborhoods.
The royal household moved and Abbas proclaimed Isfahan the capital (commonly dated to 1597–98), enabling a sustained program of monumental construction and tighter administrative control from a more defensible, central location.
Abbas’s victory over the Shaybanids at Herat secured Khorasan and reduced the eastern threat, allowing the Safavids to redirect resources toward reforms and renewed war in the west.
A Safavid campaign led by Allahverdi Khan captured Bahrain from the Portuguese, strengthening Safavid control in the Persian Gulf and signaling Abbas’s growing capacity to challenge European naval footholds via regional power projection.
The Allahverdi Khan Bridge (Si-o-se Pol) was completed, linking the planned Chahār Bāgh axis to the southern bank and facilitating access to the growing Armenian suburb of New Julfa—an infrastructural centerpiece of Abbas’s Isfahan.
Abbas launched a renewed western offensive and retook Tabriz after roughly eighteen years of Ottoman control, opening the Ottoman–Safavid war phase that restored many losses of 1590.
During the 1603–1618 conflict, Abbas implemented scorched-earth measures and forcibly relocated Armenians—especially merchants from Julfa—laying the foundations for New Julfa as a major Armenian mercantile quarter tied to Safavid silk exports.
Abbas’s forces defeated a numerically superior Ottoman army near Tabriz, a turning-point battlefield success that consolidated Safavid momentum in the western war.
Construction began on the Shah Mosque at Naqsh-e Jahan Square, one of the defining architectural commissions of Abbas’s reign and a centerpiece of the Safavid capital’s ceremonial landscape.
The Ottomans agreed to return territories gained in 1590 and revert to the earlier boundary framework; in exchange, the Safavids promised an annual tribute of silk—an agreement that soon became contested and helped lead to renewed fighting.
After Abbas refused the silk tribute specified in 1612 and war resumed, the Treaty of Serav re-established peace, stabilizing the western frontier again and confirming Safavid diplomatic leverage after battlefield successes.
Safavid troops under Imam Quli Khan, supported by the English East India Company, captured the Portuguese fortress on Hormuz Island, reshaping Persian Gulf trade and weakening Portuguese dominance in the region.
Abbas I died after a long reign that strengthened the Safavid state through military reorganization, centralization, and the transformation of Isfahan into an imperial capital with global commercial ties.
