The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in New Spain was established in Mexico City under Pedro Moya de Contreras. Its presence influenced censorship, religious conformity, and aspects of social control in the viceregal capital.
Construction of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral began on the edge of the former sacred precinct. Built over centuries, the cathedral anchored the city’s religious life and helped define the architectural and ceremonial identity of the Plaza Mayor.
Viceroy Luis de Velasco II ordered the creation of Alameda Central, which became a major urban leisure space. It helped formalize public recreation and sociability in the colonial city, even as access and policing reflected social hierarchy.
A major flood began after prolonged rain, inundating Mexico City for about five years. The disaster exposed the vulnerability of the lake-basin environment and pushed authorities toward large-scale hydraulic works and debates about whether to relocate the capital.
Amid food shortages and tensions over grain supply, a large crowd rioted in the city center, burning and damaging buildings around the main square, including the viceregal palace. The event highlighted urban vulnerability to subsistence crises and sharpened elite anxieties about plebeian unrest.
Following a royal order to reorganize commerce after the 1692 disturbances, the Parián—stone shops in the main plaza—was completed. It became a key retail center for imported and local goods and a focal point of everyday urban exchange.
A monumental terminal fountain for the Chapultepec aqueduct system was delivered as part of late-colonial urban improvement. Public fountains were vital social nodes where residents gathered for water, work, and commerce, but also sites of frequent conflict and regulation.
The Real Seminario de Minería was founded in Mexico City to modernize mining knowledge and practice under Bourbon reform priorities. The institution strengthened the city’s Enlightenment-era scientific and technical culture and fed an expanding professional class.
Work began on the Palacio de Minería, designed by Manuel Tolsá, to house the Royal School of Mines. The building embodied late-colonial institutional expansion and neoclassical urban aesthetics in the city’s historic core.
After more than two centuries of work in stages, the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral’s major construction was completed. The finished cathedral reinforced the capital’s status as the religious and ceremonial center of New Spain and remained a defining feature of urban life at the Plaza Mayor.
