Kaapa Tjampitjinpa’s early Papunya painting received major public recognition by winning first prize in the 1971 Alice Springs Caltex Art Award, helping bring attention to the new acrylic painting practice emerging from Papunya.
A group of senior men at the Papunya government settlement began painting a large mural on the school wall using acrylic paint, encouraged by teacher Geoffrey Bardon. This widely cited moment is treated as a catalyst for what became the Western Desert painting movement.
As interest in painting spread, the painters organized the Papunya Artists cooperative within the Papunya School (an early step toward an Aboriginal-run arts business and a key organizational foundation for later Papunya Tula operations).
The painters established their own company—Papunya Tula Artists—creating one of the earliest and most influential Aboriginal-owned arts businesses and a key vehicle for sustaining Western Desert painting production and sales.
In 1972, the Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory acquired a significant group of early Papunya boards—an important early institutional purchase that helped secure the movement’s place in public collections.
At a gathering of painters at Charley Creek near Alice Springs, the artists agreed on the name Papunya Tula (a hill near Papunya described as a “meeting place”), solidifying a shared identity for the emerging movement and enterprise.
Papunya Tula paintings were exhibited from the movement’s early years through local venues and events in Alice Springs, building a public platform that preceded later national and international visibility.
During the 1970s–1980s homelands movement, many Western Desert people (especially Pintupi artists) moved back toward their traditional country. This shift changed Papunya Tula’s logistics and contributed to later fieldwork bases and studios closer to outstations.
Daphne Williams began working with Papunya Tula in 1981 (initially as a field officer, later as general manager), helping coordinate materials distribution, artwork collection, and the increasingly complex operations as artists lived across widely dispersed communities.
Following the establishment of new communities and outstations, Papunya Tula constructed studios in Kintore and Kiwirrkura in the 1980s, extending operations further west and supporting artists working closer to homelands.
Papunya Tula established a retail outlet in Alice Springs as its operational footprint expanded beyond Papunya, supporting sales, administration, and engagement with collectors and institutions.
While early Papunya acrylic painting was largely male-led, the 1990s saw major growth in women producing paintings for exhibition and sale across Western Desert communities (including Kintore and others), broadening the movement’s cultural and artistic leadership.
Papunya-based artists pursued an art centre of their own, culminating in the incorporation of Papunya Tjupi Arts in late 2006—reflecting both the scale of the broader Western Desert movement and the need for locally controlled infrastructure at Papunya.
After operating initially from temporary accommodation, Papunya Tjupi Arts moved in 2009 to the premises it continues to occupy (as reported), strengthening Papunya’s local capacity for art production, cultural programming, and economic development.
