HM Bark Endeavour, commanded by James Cook, departs Plymouth to observe the Transit of Venus and pursue further Pacific exploration—setting in motion the voyage that would bring the ship to Australia’s east coast.
After weeks sailing westward across the Pacific, Endeavour’s crew sights the Australian continent’s east coast near what Cook recorded as “Point Hicks,” marking the beginning of Cook’s charting run north along the coastline.
Sailing north from the first sighting, Cook keeps the coast in view and records prominent headlands, part of the sustained charting effort that would later underpin British navigation and claims over the eastern seaboard.
Endeavour enters and anchors in Kamay (Botany Bay). Over the following days, the crew gathers water and timber and botanists collect specimens, while local Dharawal/Gweagal people mostly avoid engagement with the uninvited visitors.
During the landing attempt on Gweagal Country at Kurnell, two Gweagal men resist the approach. Cook’s party fires shots and then lands; journals record the tense encounter and the crew taking spears and other items left nearby—an early instance of conflict and dispossession dynamics in colonial contact.
After roughly a week, Cook weighs anchor and leaves Botany Bay, continuing the coastal survey north. The brief stop nonetheless becomes historically significant for its recorded Aboriginal encounters and later colonial interest in the region.
Sailing past the entrance to today’s Sydney Harbour, Cook notes an inlet that “appeared to be safe anchorage” and names it Port Jackson—information that later influences British decisions about where to establish a colony in 1788.
Cook anchors at Bustard Bay (near present-day Seventeen Seventy) and goes ashore the following day. The stop is part of ongoing efforts to find safe anchorages and replenish supplies while charting the coast.
Late at night, Endeavour hits an uncharted coral outcrop on the Great Barrier Reef. The crew jettisons heavy items and works pumps continuously to keep the ship afloat, a crisis that forces an extended shore stay for repairs.
The ship’s grounding at Endeavour Reef (often dated 11 June) becomes the defining maritime emergency of the Australian leg of the voyage, shaping where and how Cook’s party next makes landfall on the Queensland coast.
Cook brings the damaged ship into the mouth of the Endeavour River (Waalmbal Birri) to careen and repair the hull. The enforced stay leads to extended, consequential contact with local Guugu Yimithirr people and intensive collecting by Banks and Solander.
During interactions near the Endeavour River, Banks records a Guugu Yimithirr term rendered as “kangooroo” for the animal Europeans came to call a kangaroo—an enduring linguistic and cultural trace of this contact period.
After repairs and delays from weather and conditions, Cook sails again, continuing north along the reef-strewn coast—completing the last major stage of east-coast charting before entering Torres Strait.
Near Cape York, Cook conducts a possession ceremony on Possession Island, declaring British possession of the east coast he had charted and naming it “New South Wales”—a foundational act later invoked in British colonization narratives and legal claims.
