The first government pilot bilingual education programs in the Northern Territory commenced, establishing the administrative and pedagogical model that later supported Warlpiri bilingual initiatives.
Yuendumu School became one of the first NT schools to implement a bilingual program, teaching early literacy through Warlpiri alongside English and creating a long-running base for Warlpiri language education.
Yuendumu School’s Bilingual Resource Development Unit (BRDU) was established to support bilingual teaching through systematic production of Warlpiri teaching materials (e.g., readers, charts, song books), becoming a central hub for resource creation across Warlpiri-region schools.
A sustained Warlpiri lexicography effort began at Yuendumu School, generating working papers, drafts, and proofs over many years and feeding into school language programs and broader documentation.
After community advocacy, Willowra established a Warlpiri-English bilingual program, expanding Warlpiri bilingual schooling beyond Yuendumu and strengthening regional capacity for Warlpiri language education.
Warlpiri elders and educators from Yuendumu, Lajamanu, Willowra, and Nyirrpi developed the Warlpiri Theme (Knowledge) Cycle in the 1980s, formalising a local language-and-culture curriculum that BRDU supported with ongoing classroom resource production.
Lajamanu (then Hooker Creek) commenced a Warlpiri-English bilingual program, extending Warlpiri bilingual education to another major Warlpiri community and creating further demand for trained Warlpiri educators and materials.
Nyirrpi commenced a Warlpiri-English bilingual program, further consolidating a multi-community Warlpiri bilingual education network that shared curricula and locally produced Warlpiri literacy resources.
The major 1974–1989 phase of the Yuendumu-based Warlpiri Dictionary Project concluded its date range, leaving an extensive documentary record (drafts, concordances, word lists, and proofs) that underpinned later dictionary publications and educational use.
A major Warlpiri lexicographic resource—linked to long-term dictionary work associated with Yuendumu—was published, supporting both linguistic documentation and practical language teaching/learning resources.
The Lajamanu Warlpiri bilingual program ceased operating for several years, illustrating the vulnerability of community language programs to shifting policy and resourcing even where community demand was strong.
After being largely inactive for much of the early 1990s, Lajamanu’s bilingual program resumed, reflecting continuing local efforts to maintain Warlpiri language instruction despite broader system pressures.
The Northern Territory government announced that bilingual education programs would be progressively withdrawn in favour of English as a Second Language (ESL) approaches—an inflection point that reshaped Warlpiri bilingual schooling through the late 1990s into 2000.
The NT Department of Education circulated materials under its reform agenda specifying withdrawal of bilingual education resourcing, operationalising the 1998 decision and accelerating program contraction across remote schools.
By the late 1990s, Yuendumu’s BRDU had built a large collection of Warlpiri teaching resources used across Warlpiri-area schools (including Yuendumu, Lajamanu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, and others), institutionalising regional sharing of Warlpiri literacy materials.
