Tula (Tollan) emerged as a major power in central Mexico around the start of the Postclassic era, shaping elite taste and long-distance exchange networks that later polities (including the Mexica) would invoke when valuing luxury crafts such as fine textiles and featherwork.
The decline and abandonment of Tula helped drive a shift toward more regionally diverse city-states and alliances in central Mexico; these later political formations created new markets for prestige goods and expanded tribute-taking systems that would rely heavily on cloth and luxury materials.
The Mexica foundation of Tenochtitlan created the urban hub that would later concentrate specialist production and consumption of elite goods. In the imperial period, neighborhoods and guild-like craft communities in the capital supported large-scale, high-skill textile and featherworking output.
The Triple Alliance (Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, Tlacopan) enabled rapid imperial expansion and a tribute-based economy. Cloth (mantas) and other crafted goods became central to state finance and elite display, with conquered provinces supplying large quantities of textiles and raw materials.
As imperial administration matured, tribute obligations increasingly standardized the movement of textiles (including cotton and maguey-fiber mantas) into the capital. These steady inflows underwrote redistribution, state payments, and elite wardrobes, reinforcing specialized production at the household and workshop level.
Standardized cotton cloth (quachtli) functioned as a high-value medium of exchange in Postclassic Mesoamerica, especially in the Aztec tributary empire. Its monetary role linked textile production directly to markets, taxation, and large transactions (including labor and enslaved-person purchases).
Featherworkers (amanteca) were associated with the Amantla neighborhood of Tenochtitlan and formed a distinct, privileged artisan group producing luxury feather objects (including feather mosaics and elite regalia). Their position reflects how imperial demand and tribute supplies supported highly specialized craft labor.
Late-15th-century imperial expansion deepened long-distance trade and tribute extraction, increasing the inflow of exotic feathers (notably resplendent quetzal from regions to the south) and other prestige materials. These supply chains enabled large-scale production of feather mosaics and high-status feathered attire in the capital.
During Motecuhzoma II’s reign, imperial ideology and courtly hierarchy sharpened distinctions between nobles and commoners. Such stratification heightened the value of sumptuary display—fine cotton cloth, decorated garments, and feathered insignia—helping sustain specialized production and controlled distribution of luxury apparel.
The New Fire Ceremony, held every 52 years when the calendars realigned, required extensive ritual preparation and emphasized renewal. Such state-scale ceremonies created recurring demand for elite costumes and ornamentation—contexts in which finely woven textiles and featherwork were key prestige media.
When Hernán Cortés and his forces entered Tenochtitlan, accounts describe diplomatic gifting and display of imperial wealth. The encounter accelerated the movement of high-status textiles and featherworks into Spanish hands and, soon after, into transatlantic collections and ecclesiastical contexts.
The conquest culminated in the fall of Tenochtitlan, severely disrupting tribute routes, workshops, and the social institutions that supported specialist artisans. Indigenous textile and featherwork traditions persisted, but increasingly under colonial demands, new patrons, and altered material supply chains.
A major early colonial feather mosaic, dated 1539, demonstrates continuity and adaptation of amanteca techniques to Christian imagery for new patrons. It provides concrete evidence that preconquest featherworking skills and materials remained active soon after 1521, even as political and economic systems changed.
Created under viceregal auspices (c. 1541–1542), the Codex Mendoza recorded preconquest tribute obligations—including large quantities of textiles—and aspects of daily life. Its tribute imagery preserves detailed evidence for how cloth and other crafted goods structured imperial finance and production before 1521.
The Florentine Codex (compiled over the mid-to-late 16th century) includes extensive descriptions and illustrations of featherworking, including how feathers were glued and affixed in stages. These passages are foundational sources for reconstructing preconquest and early colonial techniques, tools, and workshop organization.
