The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) was founded in 1973 by Ben Finney, Herb Kawainui Kāne, and Tommy Holmes to research and perpetuate traditional Polynesian voyaging and to test purposeful long-distance navigation using a double-hulled canoe replica.
Hōkūleʻa, a performance-accurate replica of a traditional Hawaiian double-hulled voyaging canoe, was launched on March 8, 1975—marking a pivotal material-culture revival project linking canoe construction, seamanship, and cultural education.
On May 1, 1976, Hōkūleʻa departed Hawaiʻi for Tahiti and completed the crossing without modern instruments under Mau Piailug’s wayfinding—publicly demonstrating the feasibility of long-distance traditional navigation and canoe voyaging performance.

Mau Piailug died on July 12, 2010. His legacy as a teacher of non-instrument wayfinding is central to the late-20th-century resurgence of Polynesian navigation practice and associated canoe voyaging programs.
