Following the death of Kalaniʻōpuʻu and the ensuing succession conflict on Hawaiʻi Island, Kamehameha’s forces defeated those of Kīwalaʻō at Mokuʻōhai, helping establish Kamehameha as a dominant contender for island-wide rule.
The Olowalu Massacre on Maui—when Captain Simon Metcalfe’s crew fired on Hawaiians gathered for trade—helped trigger retaliatory violence and set the stage for Kamehameha’s later acquisition of foreign advisers and weapons during his consolidation campaigns.
Kamehameha’s invasion of Maui led to the Battle of Kepaniwai in ʻĪao Valley against forces led by Kalanikūpule, a major and widely remembered clash in the sequence of campaigns that expanded Kamehameha’s influence beyond Hawaiʻi Island.
Kamehameha ordered the construction of the large luakini temple Puʻukoholā Heiau (at Kawaihae) as part of a religious-political strategy tied to prophecy and the favor of the war god Kūkāʻilimoku—linking sacred authority to military unification.
At the 1791 dedication of Puʻukoholā Heiau, Kamehameha’s rival Keōua Kūʻahuʻula was killed and offered as a principal sacrifice, a decisive event that ended major opposition to Kamehameha on Hawaiʻi Island and strengthened his claim to rule.
The death of Kahekili II removed a key rival ruler and contributed to political upheaval among the Maui-Oʻahu-aligned chiefly houses, creating opportunities that Kamehameha later exploited in his next major campaigns.
Kamehameha’s forces defeated Kalanikūpule’s army at Nuʻuanu on Oʻahu, a pivotal victory that brought Oʻahu under Kamehameha’s control and shifted the balance of power toward a single-island kingdom.
After consolidating control of Oʻahu, Kamehameha attempted to invade Kauaʻi, but severe winds and seas in the Kaʻieʻie Waho channel wrecked many canoes, forcing a retreat and delaying final unification.
In the years after the failed Kauaʻi expedition, Kamehameha focused on consolidating control of conquered islands while preparing renewed capabilities for conquest, including commissioning large numbers of double-hulled war canoes and stockpiling firearms and cannon.
While Kamehameha’s court and forces were on Oʻahu in the early 1800s, the maʻi ʻokuʻu epidemic killed many and contributed to postponement of a renewed invasion attempt against Kauaʻi, extending the period of political negotiation and strategic delay.
Kaumualiʻi, ruler of Kauaʻi (and Niʻihau), traveled to Oʻahu and agreed to become a tributary/vassal under Kamehameha, enabling peaceful incorporation of the last major independent island polity into Kamehameha’s kingdom.
With Kauaʻi’s submission as a tributary kingdom, Kamehameha achieved island-wide political unification, establishing a single ruling dynasty over the Hawaiian Islands and reshaping chiefly governance into a centralized kingdom structure.
