Most current archaeological estimates place initial Polynesian arrival and settlement on Rapa Nui in the early 13th century (often modeled within 1200–1280 CE). This colonization set the foundations for the island’s later ancestor-focused ritual architecture and sculpture.
Radiocarbon evidence and regional syntheses indicate that construction of ahu (ceremonial platforms) began soon after 13th-century colonization, establishing the core ritual setting where ancestors were venerated and where later moai were erected.
At Rano Raraku—the principal statue quarry—moai production and the broader ahu-building tradition accelerated over subsequent centuries. Bayesian and radiocarbon-based chronologies commonly place major acceleration in monument construction beginning in the mid-14th century.
Modeling of dated ahu sequences suggests peak ahu construction activity around 1350–1450 CE, when communities invested heavily in ceremonial platforms and the raising of moai as powerful, lineage-linked ancestral presences.

Spain’s expedition under Felipe González de Ahedo landed on 1770-11-15 and carried out a formal possession ceremony shortly thereafter; documentation includes islanders’ marks/signatures on an annexation document, a key historical record for late-18th-century Rapa Nui society.
James Cook visited on 1774-03-14, recording observations about the island and its monuments during a period when some statues and platforms were reportedly no longer maintained in the same ways as earlier centuries.
Lay brother Eugène Eyraud arrived on 1864-01-02, becoming the first Westerner to live on Rapa Nui. Mission activity introduced new religious pressures that later interacted with (and often displaced) earlier ritual systems centered on ahu, moai, and Orongo.
During the 1868 visit of HMS Topaze, the crew removed two major moai from Rapa Nui, including Hoa Hakananai'a from Orongo. The British Museum notes Moai Hava was collected on 1868-11-02, and Hoa Hakananai'a was subsequently excavated and transported to the ship—an endpoint for this timeline’s focus period (c. 1200–1868).
