John Bozeman and John Jacobs established a wagon route (the Bozeman Trail) to the Montana goldfields that cut through contested hunting grounds. Efforts to protect this route—especially the construction and defense of forts—became a major driver of conflict in Red Cloud’s War and related Sioux Wars campaigns.
Colorado volunteers under Col. John Chivington attacked a Cheyenne and Arapaho village at Sand Creek, killing large numbers of people, including women and children. The massacre intensified warfare on the Plains and deepened mistrust toward U.S. authorities and settler communities.
Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho forces defeated and killed an 81-man U.S. Army detachment near Fort Phil Kearny. The Fetterman Fight became a turning point in Red Cloud’s War, underscoring the vulnerability of U.S. outposts built to secure travel routes across the northern Plains.
Three Medicine Lodge treaties sought to end warfare by moving Kiowa, Comanche, Plains Apache, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples onto reservations in Indian Territory. The agreements reflected the federal shift toward confinement and assimilation and foreshadowed future conflicts over treaty enforcement and land use.
The United States and the Sioux Nation signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, recognizing the Black Hills as part of the Great Sioux Reservation and setting terms tied to peace after Red Cloud’s War. A large war party of Comanche, Cheyenne, and Kiowa attacked a buffalo hunters’ outpost at Adobe Walls, Texas. The fight helped prompt the U.S. Army’s intensified southern Plains campaigns known as the Red River War (1874–1875), closely tied to bison destruction and reservation enforcement.
Lakota and Cheyenne forces fought U.S. troops and allied Crow and Shoshone under Gen. George Crook at Rosebud Creek. The engagement prevented Crook from joining other U.S. columns, shaping the campaign that soon culminated at the Little Bighorn.
Lakota and Northern Cheyenne (with some Arapaho) forces defeated Lt. Col. George A. Custer and elements of the 7th Cavalry near the Little Bighorn River. Col. Ranald S. Mackenzie attacked the Northern Cheyenne winter encampment associated with Dull Knife and Little Wolf, destroying lodges and supplies. The raid severely reduced the Cheyenne capacity to sustain resistance and forced survivors into desperate winter flight and dependency.
The Dawes (General Allotment) Act authorized dividing reservation lands into individual allotments and opening remaining “surplus” lands to non-Native acquisition. The law accelerated Indigenous land loss and attempted to dismantle tribal landholding and governance—an institutional endpoint to many Plains-era military campaigns.
U.S. troops killed large numbers of Lakota at Wounded Knee Creek during an attempt to disarm the camp amid tensions surrounding the Ghost Dance movement. The massacre is widely regarded as the last major armed conflict of the Plains Indian Wars era and a devastating culmination of U.S. military suppression and forced reservation control.
