Adolf Hitler laid the cornerstone for Munich’s Haus der Deutschen Kunst (later Haus der Kunst), conceived as a flagship venue for state-approved “German” art and a monumental example of Nazi cultural architecture.
The Reichskammer der bildenden Künste (Reich Chamber of Fine Arts) was founded as one of the RKK’s constituent chambers, extending compulsory professional regulation to visual artists, designers, and related fields—an administrative base for exclusions and exhibition controls.
The Reichsschrifttumskammer was founded to control professions tied to books (authors, publishers, booksellers, librarians). It institutionalized censorship by linking lawful cultural work to membership and “reliability” screening.
The Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of citizenship and formalized racial categories. While not art laws per se, they accelerated exclusion from professional life and reinforced the regime’s cultural policy linking “German” culture to racial ideology.
The first Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung opened at the newly completed Haus der Deutschen Kunst, presenting state-endorsed art aligned with Nazi ideals (heroic realism, classicism, rural and militarized themes). It functioned as a major annual propaganda showcase.
The Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition opened in Munich, displaying confiscated modern works in a deliberately derisive presentation to stigmatize modernism and its alleged links to Jews and “Bolshevism.” It later toured multiple cities.
The Nazi-sponsored Entartete Musik (Degenerate Music) exhibition opened in Düsseldorf to mobilize public hostility toward music labeled “un-German,” including works by Jewish composers and modernist styles, as part of broader regulation of musical life.
The Gottbegnadeten-Liste was compiled under Goebbels’s propaganda ministry to designate artists considered vital to National Socialist culture. Those listed were prioritized and often exempted from certain wartime mobilization demands, underscoring culture’s role in the war effort.
With Germany’s surrender and the collapse of the Nazi state, the Reich Chamber of Culture effectively ended, and Allied authorities subsequently dismantled Nazi institutions as part of denazification.
