Tanganyika became independent on 9 December 1961, with Julius Nyerere as prime minister, marking the start of self-rule on the mainland that would later form part of Tanzania.
On 9 December 1962, Tanganyika replaced its independence-era constitutional monarchy structure with a republic, and Nyerere became president—an early step toward the centralized executive leadership later associated with ujamaa-era governance.
On 12 January 1964, the Zanzibar Revolution toppled the Sultan’s government and brought revolutionary rule to the islands—events that strongly shaped the subsequent union with Tanganyika and the political trajectory of the new state.
On 26 April 1964 (Union Day), Tanganyika and Zanzibar formed a single sovereign state, the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, with Nyerere as president and Abeid Amani Karume as vice president—foundational to Nyerere’s later national ujamaa program.
On 29 October 1964, the union state adopted the name United Republic of Tanzania (a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar), consolidating the new national identity under Nyerere’s leadership.
In 1965, constitutional changes in the Interim Constitution period helped formalize Tanzania’s move toward a single-party state (TANU on the mainland; ASP in Zanzibar), shaping the authoritarian features of the Nyerere era.
In 1967, Nyerere’s Education for Self-Reliance laid out an agenda to align schooling with ujamaa goals—emphasizing productive work, rural development, and national self-reliance rather than elite credentialing.
Following the Arusha Declaration, the government moved to nationalize major industries and commercial banking, expanding state control over the economy as a practical implementation of ujamaa-era socialism.
On 5 February 1967, Nyerere issued the Arusha Declaration, committing Tanzania to socialism and self-reliance and setting an ideological framework that underpinned nationalization drives and the push toward rural collectivization.
On 7 April 1972, Zanzibar president and Tanzanian vice president Abeid Amani Karume was assassinated, a major political shock in the union that intensified security concerns and influenced subsequent union/islands politics.
From 1973, Tanzania escalated rural reorganization via Operation Vijiji, shifting from earlier experimental/voluntary approaches to forced villagization to concentrate populations into ujamaa villages for communal production and service delivery.
On 5 February 1977, Tanzania’s ruling parties—TANU (mainland) and ASP (Zanzibar)—merged to create CCM, institutionalizing a unified ruling-party structure across the union.
On 25 April 1977, Tanzania adopted a new Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, replacing earlier constitutional arrangements and embedding the political order of the single-party era.
In October 1978, Ugandan forces invaded Tanzania’s Kagera Salient, leading Nyerere’s government to mobilize for war—an event that strained Tanzania’s economy and state capacity late in the ujamaa period.
On 11 April 1979, Tanzanian troops captured Kampala, accelerating the collapse of Idi Amin’s government—one of Tanzania’s most consequential foreign interventions under Nyerere.
On 5 November 1985, Julius Nyerere retired from the presidency, ending the core political period associated with ujamaa-state building (1960s–1980s) and opening a new phase under Ali Hassan Mwinyi.
