Ivan A. Serov was appointed the first Chairman of the KGB, overseeing the organization during its initial consolidation and early Cold War operations.
The KGB’s external intelligence arm—commonly known as the First Chief (Main) Directorate—was established as part of the 1954 reorganization, providing a centralized structure for foreign intelligence collection and overseas operations.
Aleksandr M. Sakharovsky became head of the KGB’s First Chief Directorate (foreign intelligence), guiding it through major Cold War episodes and institutional expansion across the 1950s–1960s.
During the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, KGB leadership (including Chairman Serov) played a key role in Soviet security operations connected to suppressing the uprising, illustrating the KGB’s integration into Soviet crisis management in the Eastern Bloc.
Yuri V. Andropov became Chairman of the KGB, beginning the organization’s longest chairmanship and a period associated with stronger institutional focus on political control and counter-dissent work.
Following Andropov’s initiative and a CPSU Central Committee decision, the KGB established the Fifth Directorate in July 1967 to focus on “ideological counterintelligence,” including surveillance and repression of dissident activity.
The Warsaw Pact invasion ended the Prague Spring reforms in Czechoslovakia; Soviet security organs (including the KGB) were involved in the broader suppression and stabilization effort accompanying the intervention.
The KGB created “Group A” (Alpha Group) as a special-purpose unit associated with counterterrorism and high-risk operations, reflecting the KGB’s growing specialized operational capabilities.

After Andropov left the KGB, Vitaly V. Fedorchuk became Chairman, leading the organization for a short transitional period in 1982.
Viktor M. Chebrikov became Chairman of the KGB, serving through much of the early Gorbachev era as the organization confronted reform pressures and political liberalization.
Vladimir A. Kryuchkov was appointed KGB Chairman in a high-level reshuffle, becoming a central figure in late-Soviet security policy and later the 1991 coup attempt.
During the August Coup, KGB Chairman Kryuchkov joined the State Committee on the State of Emergency (GKChP), which attempted to seize control while President Mikhail Gorbachev was held captive; the failure of the coup accelerated the USSR’s collapse.
After the coup’s collapse, Vadim V. Bakatin was appointed Chairman of the KGB and tasked with winding down and restructuring Soviet state security amid rapidly shifting political authority.
The KGB was officially abolished in late 1991, with its functions fragmented among successor entities as the Soviet Union disintegrated and new security institutions were created.
