An image of Christ displayed at the Chalke Gate (the ceremonial entrance to the Great Palace) was removed and replaced with a cross (sources date this action to 726 or 730). The act became a highly visible signal of the court’s anti-image stance and helped trigger popular unrest and polarization.
Leo III proclaimed iconoclasm as official policy and ordered removal/destruction of sacred images in churches, bringing imperial authority directly into conflict with defenders of icons (especially monastic circles and many clergy).
Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople resigned rather than subscribe to Leo III’s iconoclast decree, highlighting the limits of episcopal compliance and the severity of the church–state rupture the policy created.
John of Damascus produced an early and influential theological defense of icons (commonly dated c. 730), helping articulate arguments later used by iconodule theologians and councils.
After Germanus’s departure, Leo III installed Anastasius as patriarch (22 January 730), tightening imperial control over the patriarchate and aligning the capital’s senior ecclesiastical office with iconoclast policy.
During the civil war following Leo III’s death, Artabasdos seized power (June 741–November 743) and positioned himself as a protector of icons, briefly reversing iconoclast signals to win support—showing how imperial legitimacy and religious policy could intertwine.
Convened by Constantine V, the Council of Hieria (754) condemned the veneration and production of icons, presenting itself as authoritative and giving a conciliar framework to imperial iconoclasm (later rejected by iconodule councils).
Stephen the Younger, a prominent monastic opponent of Constantine V’s iconoclasm, was executed (28 November 764). His death became a major iconodule martyr narrative and illustrates the intensified pressure placed on monastic defenders of images.
With Empress Irene’s support and under Patriarch Tarasius, the Second Council of Nicaea (787) rejected the iconoclast council of 754 and affirmed that icons may receive reverence/veneration (not adoration), restoring iconodule doctrine in the empire’s official church teaching.
Under Emperor Leo V, an iconoclast council in Constantinople (815) repudiated the Second Council of Nicaea (787) and reaffirmed earlier iconoclast positions, inaugurating the second phase of Byzantine iconoclasm.
Emperor Theophilos intensified iconoclast enforcement by issuing an edict in 832 forbidding the veneration of icons, reinforcing the second iconoclast period through state policy and pressure on clergy and monasteries.
Theophilos (often treated as the last iconoclast emperor) died on 20 January 842, leaving the empire to the child Michael III under the regency of Empress Theodora—conditions that enabled a rapid policy reversal.
A local council convened in Constantinople on 3 or 4 March 843 under Empress Theodora and Patriarch Methodios I reaffirmed the Nicene (787) settlement, condemned iconoclasm, and secured the definitive restoration of icons in church life.
On 11 March 843, the restoration was publicly celebrated with a procession bearing an icon to Hagia Sophia—commemorated thereafter as the Feast of Orthodoxy—cementing the end of iconoclasm as both doctrine and public ritual.
