Hōnen publicly advocates senju nembutsu (exclusive recitation of Namu Amida Butsu) as the central practice for rebirth in Amida Buddha’s Pure Land—an origin point traditionally used for the founding of Jōdo-shū and its institutional identity.
Hōnen’s community forms around his Kyoto hermitage (Yoshimizu), where he teaches across social ranks and attracts a large circle of disciples—helping turn Pure Land practice into a distinct, organized movement.
At the request of Kujō Kanezane, Hōnen composes the Senchaku hongan nembutsu-shū (often abbreviated Senchakushū), systematizing his Pure Land argument and giving the movement a foundational doctrinal text.

Following the 1207 crackdown, Hōnen is sent into exile in Sanuki (on Shikoku). Despite restrictions, the exile period becomes part of the tradition’s institutional memory and later narratives of perseverance and propagation.
In the Jōgen persecution (Jōgen-no-hōnan), authorities suppress the movement: key disciples are executed and Hōnen is exiled from Kyoto—an event that both threatened the community and helped spread it regionally as disciples were dispersed.
Court amnesty allows Hōnen to return from exile. Back in Kyoto, he resumes teaching in his final year, reinforcing continuity of leadership and practice after the persecution.
The Kegon monk Myoe authors Zaijarin (1212), an early major doctrinal critique of Hōnen’s exclusive-nembutsu teaching—illustrating how Jōdo-shū’s institutionalization unfolded amid sustained intellectual contestation.
Two days before his death, Hōnen writes the Ichimai kishōmon (One-Sheet Document), a short final testament summarizing reliance on Amida and nembutsu practice; it becomes a widely recited text within Jōdo-shū liturgy and identity.
Hōnen dies in Kyoto (recorded in temple tradition as the 25th day of the first lunar month of 1212). His disciples establish a mausoleum at Ōtani, anchoring a physical memorial site that later becomes central to Jōdo-shū institutional continuity.
Warrior-monks from Mt. Hiei attack and destroy the Ōtani mausoleum in the Karoku persecution (1227). The episode shapes later institutional responses, including protective measures around texts and relics tied to Hōnen.
Hōnen’s disciple Genchi repairs and rebuilds structures at Ōtani and formally establishes Chion-in (1234), providing an enduring institutional center that later becomes the headquarters of Jōdo-shū.
Hōnen and the Institutionalization of Jōdo-shū (1175–1212)
