In spring–summer 782, an Abbasid army led by the heir Hārūn al-Rashīd advanced deep into Byzantine Asia Minor, reaching Chrysopolis across from Constantinople. The campaign ended with a three-year truce in which Empress Irene agreed to pay an annual tribute, highlighting Abbasid leverage on the frontier.
In September 788, Abbasid forces won at Kopidnadon (near Podandos), continuing the pattern of major seasonal raids into Anatolia and underscoring the military pressure the Abbasids could apply along the Taurus frontier.
In August/September 804, the Byzantines under Emperor Nikephoros I were heavily defeated at Krasos in Phrygia during renewed warfare with the Abbasids, contributing to a return to tributary arrangements and short-term truces.
On 11 June 806, Caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd led a massive expedition into Asia Minor, capturing key places (including Heraclea Cybistra and Tyana) and forcing Nikephoros I to agree to peace involving substantial payments and tribute—an apex of Abbasid coercive diplomacy against Byzantium.
On 22 July 838, Abbasid forces under Afshīn defeated Emperor Theophilos at Anzen (Dazimon). The victory opened the way for the Abbasid strike against Amorium and stands as a major battlefield success in Abbasid–Byzantine warfare.
In August 838, Caliph al-Muʿtaṣim captured and sacked Amorium, one of Byzantium’s major Anatolian cities. The fall of Amorium became a powerful political and symbolic blow in the Abbasid–Byzantine conflict.
In 844 the Byzantines suffered defeat at Mauropotamos. The following year, both sides agreed to a truce and organized a major prisoner exchange, illustrating how warfare routinely shifted into negotiated settlement and humanitarian diplomacy along the frontier.
In September 845, Abbasid and Byzantine representatives carried out a large-scale prisoner exchange at the River Lamos. Such exchanges were a recurring feature of Abbasid–Byzantine diplomacy, often paired with temporary truces.
On 3 September 863, Byzantine forces defeated and killed ʿUmar al-Aqṭa of Melitene at the Battle of Lalakaon. The victory is widely treated as a turning point that helped Byzantium begin a more sustained eastern offensive in subsequent decades.
In 872 or 878, Byzantine forces decisively defeated the Paulicians at Bathys Ryax, killing their leader Chrysocheir. Because the Paulician polity had collaborated with Muslim frontier emirates, its collapse reduced an important allied threat on Byzantium’s eastern marches.
In 904, a Muslim fleet led by Leo of Tripoli captured and sacked Thessalonica, Byzantium’s second city. The episode demonstrates that Abbasid-aligned or Abbasid-identified maritime raiding could threaten deep into Byzantine territory and spur ransoms and prisoner negotiations.
In 974–975, Emperor John I Tzimiskes led offensives into Syria and the Levant amid fragmented Muslim politics, engaging powers operating under (or alongside) Abbasid authority structures. These campaigns exemplify the 10th-century strategic context in which Abbasid–Byzantine relations increasingly mixed diplomacy with shifting regional coalitions.
