Caliph al-Mansur established Baghdad (Madinat al-Salam, “City of Peace”) as a purpose-built imperial capital on the Tigris, initiating a major state-sponsored urban project that would anchor Abbasid administration and culture.
Work began on the circular walled core of Baghdad—later called the Round City—with four main gates and axial roads converging on the caliphal palace and central mosque, expressing Abbasid political order through urban form.
The caliphal Palace of the Golden Gate and the principal congregational mosque of the Round City were reportedly finished early enough for al-Mansur to move his residence into the new capital, marking Baghdad’s initial functional readiness as a court city.
The main works of the Round City (walls, gates, and core administrative/palatial zone) were completed, establishing the planned nucleus from which Baghdad rapidly expanded into surrounding suburbs and commercial districts.
Al-Mansur initiated the Khuld Palace on land between the Round City and the Tigris, adding a major riverside palatial-and-garden complex that complemented the ceremonial core and reflected Baghdad’s growth beyond the original circular enclosure.
The Khuld Palace was inaugurated and became a frequently used caliphal residence alongside the Golden Gate Palace, indicating the court’s expanding architectural footprint and the emergence of additional elite zones beyond the Round City center.
Under Harun al-Rashid, Baghdad’s courtly and scholarly life flourished; later tradition strongly associates his reign with the establishment or expansion of the Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) as Baghdad’s reputation grew as a hub of learning and exchange.
The struggle between al-Amin and al-Ma'mun culminated in fighting that devastated parts of Baghdad and its infrastructure; major palatial areas such as the Khuld complex reportedly suffered severe damage, highlighting the city’s vulnerability despite its planned core.
In August 819, al-Ma'mun returned to Baghdad to rule directly, rebuilding administrative capacity after wartime destruction and reinforcing Baghdad’s centrality as the Abbasid capital.
During al-Ma'mun’s Baghdad reign, the Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) is described as an academy with a library and an observatory, emblematic of Abbasid investment in scholarly infrastructure that shaped Baghdad’s urban-cultural stature.
Responding to tensions in Baghdad linked to the rising Turkish military, al-Mu'tasim founded Samarra and moved the Abbasid capital there—an immense planned urban development with palaces, mosques, and regimented housing that temporarily shifted imperial building away from Baghdad.
Al-Mutawakkil initiated the monumental congregational mosque at Samarra, integrating religious architecture with a broader eastward urban extension and making the mosque complex a centerpiece of Abbasid ceremonial space.
The Great Mosque of Samarra—among the largest mosques of its era—was completed, with its distinctive spiral minaret (Malwiya) becoming an iconic marker of Abbasid architectural ambition tied to planned urban expansion.
The caliphs returned the capital to Baghdad after Samarra’s period as seat of government (836–892), ending the major ninth-century shift in imperial urban patronage and setting the stage for Baghdad’s later medieval development beyond the early Abbasid core.
