In 836, Caliph al-Mu'tasim established Samarra as the Abbasid court’s new seat, driven largely by tensions in Baghdad around the growing Turkish (and other) slave-soldier military presence. The move initiated the Samarra Period’s distinctive fusion of capital-building and military politics.
Al-Mu'tasim constructed the principal caliphal palace complex in Samarra—known as the Dār al-Khilāfa / Jawsaq al-Khaqānī—as a centerpiece of the new capital and as a spatial expression of a court increasingly oriented around a powerful military household.
After al-Mu'tasim’s death, al-Wathiq became caliph in 842, continuing governance from Samarra and maintaining the capital’s military-centered political order.
In 847, al-Mutawakkil acceded as caliph and presided over major architectural expansion in Samarra, even as court politics remained deeply intertwined with the interests of elite military commanders.
Al-Mutawakkil commissioned the Great Mosque of Samarra in 848, part of an ambitious building program that reshaped the capital and projected caliphal authority through monumental urban and religious architecture.
In 851, al-Mutawakkil ended the Mihna, the Abbasid-sponsored inquisition associated with enforcing doctrinal positions. The decision marked a major shift in religious policy and helped reconfigure caliphal legitimacy in a politically tense Samarra court.
The Great Mosque of Samarra was completed by 851 (often dated across 848–852 in architectural references). Its immense scale and the adjacent spiral minaret (Malwiya) became defining symbols of Samarra’s Abbasid monumental style.
On 861-12-11, al-Mutawakkil was assassinated in Samarra by members of his Turkic guard, a watershed event that triggered a prolonged crisis of succession and intensified the political dominance of rival military factions at court.
From 861 to 870, the Abbasid court in Samarra underwent the Anarchy at Samarra, marked by rapid and often violent turnovers of caliphs and the elevation of military commanders as kingmakers, gravely weakening central authority.
In 868, Ahmad ibn Tulun was sent to Egypt as governor/lieutenant and began building an autonomous power base. His rise illustrates how Samarra-era military patronage and fiscal-military politics facilitated provincial dynasties beyond the capital’s effective control.
In September 869, the Zanj Rebellion began in southern Iraq and became a major, long-running threat to Abbasid control, drawing resources and attention from the Samarra-based regime and highlighting the caliphate’s mounting internal vulnerabilities.
In 870, Caliph al-Muhtadi was killed amid factional struggle, and al-Mu'tamid became caliph. Power increasingly concentrated in the hands of his brother al-Muwaffaq, who emerged as the de facto regent and chief military-political organizer.
On 876-04-08, Abbasid forces under al-Muwaffaq defeated the Saffarid ruler Ya'qub ibn al-Layth at the Battle of Dayr al-Aqul, checking a direct external-military challenge to Iraq during the Samarra-era recovery attempts.
By 879–880, al-Muwaffaq and his son (the future caliph al-Mu'tadid) intensified large-scale operations against the Zanj, signaling a more coordinated reassertion of central military capacity after the peak instability of Samarra court politics.
In February 881, Abbasid forces began the siege of al-Mukhtarah, the Zanj rebel stronghold, tightening control over southern Iraq and marking the rebellion’s strategic contraction toward a final defeat.
In August 883, al-Mukhtarah fell and the Zanj Rebellion effectively ended, removing a major internal threat that had compounded Samarra-era fiscal strain and political-military fragmentation.
Al-Muwaffaq died on 891-06-02. His dominance as regent had been central to Abbasid survival during late Samarra-rule crises, and his death accelerated the transition toward his son al-Mu'tadid’s consolidation.
Samarra served as the Abbasid capital from 836 to 892; by 892 the caliphal center shifted back to Baghdad, ending the Samarra Period as the city rapidly declined without sustained court investment.
In 892, al-Mu'tadid became caliph after al-Mu'tamid’s death and pursued administrative and fiscal reorganization. His accession is commonly treated as a turning point toward a more forceful post-Samarra restoration of Abbasid governance from Baghdad.
