In early September 869, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad launched a revolt among laborers (many of them enslaved Africans known as Zanj) working in the salt marshes of southern Iraq, quickly drawing followers with promises of freedom and wealth.
Within weeks of the revolt’s outbreak, Zanj forces defeated a Basran army detachment, demonstrating that local authorities could not easily suppress the movement and helping the rebellion attract additional recruits.
After early successes, the Zanj established a fortified base and de facto capital, al-Mukhtārah (“the Chosen”), in the difficult marsh-and-canal terrain south of Basra—an ideal setting for defense and raids.
After the turbulent Anarchy at Samarra, al-Muʿtamid was proclaimed Abbasid caliph in June 870; effective power increasingly rested with his brother and regent al-Muwaffaq, who would become central to the anti-Zanj war effort.
Zanj forces captured al-Ubulla (a key port near Basra) on 28 June 870, damaging Abbasid communications and trade in the Basra region and tightening pressure on the city.
As the conflict widened beyond lower Iraq, Zanj forces operated in al-Ahwāz/Ahvāz (Khuzestan), threatening key routes and towns and forcing the Abbasids to fight on multiple fronts.
In early September 871, Zanj forces and allies broke into Basra and devastated the city. The episode was one of the rebellion’s most notorious victories and underscored the Abbasids’ inability to protect a major urban center.
In April 872, Zanj forces defeated al-Muwaffaq (the caliphal regent and commander), a setback that prolonged the rebellion and reinforced the rebels’ reputation for military effectiveness in the marshlands.
In 878, Zanj forces seized Wāsiṭ, a strategic city on the Tigris corridor. The capture marked a high-water point of rebel territorial reach and intensified the crisis for the Abbasid state.
In 879 the Abbasid leadership initiated a large-scale pushback against the Zanj. Command responsibilities were given to Abū al-ʿAbbās (later caliph al-Muʿtaḍid), signaling a more sustained, resource-intensive phase of the war.
By 880, Abbasid forces captured al-Manīʿah (“the Impregnable”), a major Zanj fortified site. Its fall narrowed rebel operational space and helped drive Zanj forces back toward al-Mukhtārah.
In February 881, al-Muwaffaq began the siege of al-Mukhtārah, using nearby bases and sustained pressure—along with negotiated surrenders—to erode the rebels’ defenses over more than two years.
In August 883, Abbasid forces captured al-Mukhtārah, and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad was killed (or captured and executed), effectively ending the Zanj Rebellion as an organized political-military threat.
On 30 November 883, Abū al-ʿAbbās entered Baghdad in a victory procession; sources report the public display of ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad’s head as a grim signal that the revolt had been decisively suppressed.
