The Seljuk defeat of the Byzantine army at Manzikert accelerated Turkic expansion into Anatolia, weakening Byzantium and reshaping the strategic environment that later drew both Seljuks and Fatimids into intensified Levantine competition on the eve of the Crusades.
The Turkman commander Atsiz ibn Uwaq took Jerusalem, displacing Fatimid authority and inserting Seljuk-linked power into southern Syria/Palestine—an early flashpoint in Fatimid–Seljuk rivalry over the Levant.
After local resistance, Atsiz retook Jerusalem and carried out a large-scale killing in the city, underscoring the volatility of Seljuk-Turkman rule in Palestine and the stakes for the Fatimids’ efforts to restore control.
The Armenian commander Badr al-Jamali arrived in Egypt (late 1073) and was appointed vizier with sweeping powers, stabilizing the regime and enabling renewed Fatimid action in Palestine and the Hijaz amid Seljuk pressure.
Damascus fell to Atsiz (1076), who then attempted to invade Egypt (defeated in 1077). Fatimid sieges of Damascus (1077 and 1078) did not recover the city, and Seljuk prince Tutush ultimately took over, consolidating anti-Fatimid power in Syria.
In August 1098, Fatimid forces occupied Jerusalem, exploiting Seljuk fragmentation. This repositioned the First Crusade’s final objective against Fatimid, not Seljuk, control in Palestine.
The Crusader army besieged Jerusalem (June–July 1099) and captured it on 15 July 1099, ending Fatimid rule in the city and turning Egypt–Levant politics into sustained confrontation between the Fatimids and the new Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem.
A Fatimid army under al-Afdal Shahanshah advanced after Jerusalem’s fall but was defeated at Ascalon, enabling the Crusaders to consolidate their foothold while leaving Ascalon as a major Fatimid base for continued raids into the kingdom.
At Ramla (7 September 1101), the Kingdom of Jerusalem defeated a major Fatimid field army. The engagement became part of a recurring pattern: Fatimid expeditions from Egypt tested the kingdom’s defenses while failing to reverse the 1099 losses.
The Fatimids won at Ramla (17 May 1102), briefly threatening Crusader stability, but the Crusaders then defeated Fatimid forces at Jaffa (27 May 1102), limiting Cairo’s ability to capitalize on battlefield success in Palestine.
The fall of Acre (May 1104) to King Baldwin I and Genoese allies deprived the Fatimids of a key port, reducing Egyptian strategic options in the Levant and tightening Crusader control of coastal supply lines.
After a prolonged siege (January–August 1153), the Crusaders captured Ascalon, the last major Fatimid-held coastal fortress in Palestine. Its loss ended Fatimid territorial control there and reoriented regional politics toward Zengid and later Ayyubid competition over Egypt and the Levant.
Nur al-Din took Damascus in April 1154, unifying much of Syria under Zengid rule. This increased pressure on the Crusader states and set conditions for intensified interventions in Egypt—where Fatimid authority had become fragile.
In the culminating phase of the Egyptian crisis, Zengid commander Shirkuh was appointed Fatimid vizier on 18 January 1169. His short tenure marked the decisive penetration of Syrian (Sunni) military power into the Fatimid state.
Shirkuh died on 23 March 1169; within days, Saladin was appointed vizier (26 March 1169). This transition created the political mechanism by which the Fatimid caliphate’s remaining authority would be eclipsed by a new military household tied to Nur al-Din and, soon, to Saladin’s own dynasty.
