Isma'ili missionary Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Shiʿi mobilized the Kutama Berbers, whose forces overthrew Aghlabid authority in Ifriqiya. The Kutama became the early core military constituency of the new Fatimid state and its initial field army.
ʿUbayd Allah (al-Mahdi) was installed as imam-caliph, formalizing the Fatimid Caliphate. Early Fatimid military power relied heavily on Kutama Berber troops, binding the dynasty’s legitimacy to a tribal-backed army.
The Fatimids founded al-Mahdiyya as a new capital city with strong defenses and a maritime orientation. The move strengthened logistics and command for campaigns and coastal operations, reinforcing a state model that paired court-centered rule with professional troops.
The dynasty relocated its court to al-Mansuriyya, a new palatial capital near Kairouan. This continued the Fatimid pattern of building purpose-made capitals to manage elite troops and administration from a controlled military-political center.
General Jawhar led the successful Fatimid invasion of Egypt, defeating the Ikhshidid regime and initiating the establishment of a new capital north of Fustat. Conquest created new demands for garrisoning and supply, accelerating the Fatimids’ need for multi-ethnic troops beyond the Kutama.
The Fatimid caliphate transferred its main seat from North Africa to Cairo, turning Egypt into the empire’s administrative and military hub. The move required sustained garrison forces and helped institutionalize pay, provisioning, and factional balance among army groups.
From 978, Caliph al-ʿAziz increasingly recruited soldiers from the Islamic East—especially Turkic and Daylamite slave-soldiers (ghilmān)—after Levant campaigns exposed limits of a Kutama-centered force. This deepened the long-term rivalry between western-origin troops (Maghāriba) and eastern-origin troops (Mashāriqa).
In the mid-11th century crisis known as the Mustansirite Hardship, military struggles between Turkish and African factions—including episodes like the siege of Cairo—worsened instability and shortages. The conflict illustrates how dependence on competing military slave/mercenary blocs could paralyze the state.
Caliph al-Mustansir summoned Badr al-Jamali, who came to Egypt with his Armenian troops and took power as a military strongman (eventually vizier). His rise marked a shift toward militarized vizieral rule, where control of disciplined slave-soldiers and personal regiments underpinned government authority.
After Badr al-Jamali’s death, his son al-Afdal Shahanshah became vizier, maintaining a system where the vizier and his military following dominated political decision-making. This continuity entrenched the centrality of elite regiments and palace-military networks in Fatimid governance.
A Fatimid expedition under al-Afdal was routed at the Battle of Ascalon, shortly after Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders. The defeat constrained Fatimid power projection in Palestine and highlighted challenges in coordinating large composite forces under vizieral command.
In the late Fatimid power struggle, the Zengid commander Shirkuh entered Cairo and was appointed vizier (and commander), signaling the degree to which Fatimid military organization had become dependent on external Sunni-led forces and their command structures.
After Shirkuh’s death, Saladin was appointed vizier, becoming the effective holder of military and administrative authority. This appointment marked the final transition from Fatimid slave-soldier/vizier politics to an Ayyubid-led military regime inside Egypt.
The public proclamation of the Abbasid caliph’s name in the Cairo Friday sermon (khutba) symbolically terminated Fatimid sovereignty; al-ʿĀḍid died days later, sealing the dynasty’s collapse. The end of Fatimid rule dismantled the institutional framework that had sustained its multi-ethnic army and slave-soldier factions.
