A faction of prince-electors, encouraged by Pope Clement VI, elected Charles of Luxembourg in opposition to Emperor Louis IV. The contested election set the stage for Charles IV’s later constitutional reforms, including the Golden Bull.

The concluding chapters (24–31) of the Golden Bull were issued at Metz, completing the document that would govern imperial elections and aspects of imperial structure for centuries.
Charles IV was crowned King of Burgundy (Kingdom of Arles) at Arles, a symbolic assertion of imperial authority and the last such coronation at Arles by a Holy Roman Emperor.
