In the early 13th century, merchants from the Holy Roman Empire established the Peterhof in Novgorod, one of the League’s major kontors (foreign trading posts). It became central to Baltic–Rus’ trade (especially furs and wax) and illustrates the League’s reach beyond imperial borders.
Emperor Frederick II granted Lübeck imperial immediacy (becoming a Free Imperial City). This status helped Lübeck act with unusual autonomy inside the Holy Roman Empire and later underpin its role as the League’s leading city and diplomatic coordinator.
The word Hanse is attested in a document in 1267, marking the growing visibility of north German merchant and town cooperation that would develop into the Hanseatic League’s wider institutions.
The first recorded Hanseatic Diet (Hansetag) met in Lübeck (2 February 1356). Regular diets gave Hanseatic towns a mechanism to coordinate policy, embargoes, and diplomacy—activities that frequently intersected with Holy Roman Empire politics and urban privileges.
Conflict escalated after Denmark’s King Valdemar IV took Visby on Gotland (1361), initiating the Danish–Hanseatic War (1361–1370). The war highlighted the League’s capacity to mobilize fleets and alliances, including many imperial cities and towns.
On 19 November 1367, Hanseatic cities and allied towns formed the Confederation of Cologne, a military alliance against Denmark. The coalition demonstrates how Hanseatic coordination could become quasi-political, drawing together many towns from within (and adjacent to) the Holy Roman Empire.
The Treaty of Stralsund (24 May 1370) ended the Second Danish–Hanseatic War and confirmed major Hanseatic advantages in Baltic trade and security. The settlement is often treated as a high point of Hanseatic influence in northern Europe.
The Hansetag of 1447 is noted as the most attended Hanseatic Diet, illustrating intensified coordination in the 15th century as the League faced governance challenges and growing competition in northern European trade.
Naval conflict between England and the Hanseatic League began around 1470, driven by disputes over commercial privileges and competition. The war shows the League acting as a diplomatic and military bloc—an approach shaped by its long practice of coordination among imperial and non-imperial towns.
In 1474, the Treaty (Peace) of Utrecht ended the Anglo-Hanseatic War and restored/secured key Hanseatic trading privileges in England, including rights connected to the London Steelyard. It underscores how Hanseatic diplomacy protected merchant interests across borders.
In 1494, Ivan III closed the Hanseatic Peterhof in Novgorod and deported merchants, aiming to curb Hanseatic influence on Russian trade. The closure disrupted one of the League’s principal eastern nodes and marked a major setback for Hanseatic commerce in the region.
