The Mongol invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire carried Mongol power deep into Transoxiana and Iran, bringing the empire into sustained contact with Islamic scholarly and technical traditions. The Maragheh Observatory was founded under Hülegü’s patronage with Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī as director. In 1260, Kublai Khan issued Jiaochao banknotes, creating a unified paper currency that became central to Yuan fiscal administration. The Mongol state’s use and promotion of paper money helped standardize long-distance commerce within its eastern domains and made the practice widely known to foreign visitors.
In 1267, the Persian astronomer Jamal al-Din Bukhari is credited with bringing (or presenting) a set of astronomical instruments to Kublai Khan, including an astrolabe and a terrestrial globe. The episode is a well-known marker of instrumental and observational knowledge transfer across Mongol-ruled Eurasia.
Kublai Khan commissioned the Tibetan lama Drogön Chögyal Phagpa to design a script for multiple languages of the empire; the ’Phags-pa script was completed in 1269. Its use on official objects (including some seals and state media) reflects a Mongol attempt to standardize communication across culturally diverse regions.
An Islamic Astronomical Bureau was established in Beijing during the Yuan, operating alongside the traditional Chinese bureau. It institutionalized the presence of Muslim astronomers and techniques at court, enabling astronomical methods and instruments to circulate between Islamic and East Asian scholarly-administrative worlds.
During the protracted Yuan–Song struggle, the siege of Xiangyang (1268–1273) featured the introduction and/or large-scale use of counterweight trebuchets (often labeled “Muslim trebuchets” in Chinese sources). Scholarship commonly associates the 13th-century Mongol conquests with the rapid westward spread of gunpowder knowledge; written formulas appear in Middle Eastern sources in the mid-to-late 1200s.
