The return route follows the maritime trading world of the Indian Ocean (via islands and ports along South and Southeast Asia), highlighting the sea-lanes that linked Yuan China with the Persian Gulf and beyond.
The convoy reaches Persia around 1293; sources note that Arghun had died by then and that Kököchin married Ghazan. The episode became a key anchor point in reconciling Marco Polo’s itinerary with non-European chronicles.
Marco Polo returns to Venice in 1295, bringing first-hand descriptions of Mongol rule, trade networks, and distant cities that quickly circulated in Europe through oral report and, soon after, in written form.
While imprisoned in Genoa, Marco Polo dictates his narrative to Rustichello da Pisa (also spelled Rusticello). The resulting Devisement du monde (often known as Il milione) becomes Europe’s most influential account of Mongol Asia and Eurasian trade routes.
During the Genoa–Venice conflict, Marco Polo is captured in the aftermath of the Battle of Curzola. His imprisonment becomes the immediate precondition for the composition of the famous travel account.
