Poet-activists Namdeo Dhasal and J. V. Pawar launched the Dalit Panthers in Bombay (now Mumbai), a radical Ambedkarite youth formation inspired in part by the Black Panther model and reacting to factionalism in established Dalit party politics.
Dhasal’s early poetry collection Golpitha became a landmark of Dalit literature and helped shape the Panthers’ cultural-political style by bringing slum life, violence, and caste oppression into an uncompromising public idiom.
The Panthers circulated a manifesto (often dated to 1973) framing Dalit emancipation as requiring total social revolution, naming enemies such as landlords and capitalists and rejecting incremental reform as insufficient.
Internal ideological and strategic conflicts produced a major split in 1974, with competing leadership groupings emerging (often described in later accounts as Dhasal- and Dhale-aligned tendencies). The rupture weakened organizational cohesion during a period of state repression and street conflict.
Violence erupted in Mumbai’s Worli area after a Dalit Panthers rally; clashes involving the Panthers, Shiv Sena supporters, and police continued in phases for months, leaving multiple deaths and many injuries and becoming a major turning point for the movement’s trajectory.
During India’s Emergency (1975–1977), Namdeo Dhasal’s decision to support Indira Gandhi intensified internal divisions, while opponents within the Panthers argued this stance compromised democratic principles and movement autonomy.
After a major Panthers gathering at Nagpur (reported in accounts as a 1976 conference), Raja Dhale and J. V. Pawar left the Panthers’ fold and formed/entered an alternative organizational vehicle described as the “Mass Movement,” formalizing the post-split fragmentation.
By early 1977, leading figures moved to formally end the original Dalit Panthers structure; later recollections describe a printed dissolution statement being distributed to journalists as the organization’s official closure.
A regrouped formation—Bharatiya Dalit Panthers (BDP)—was declared at a meeting in Aurangabad, with Arun Kamble named leader and Gangadhar Gade as general secretary, and Ramdas Athawale taking an organizer role. The BDP aimed to rebuild a militant, village-reaching Dalit political presence in Maharashtra.
As the Namantar (name-change) campaign gathered force, BDP-linked leadership publicly advanced demands to rename Marathwada University after B. R. Ambedkar, helping embed radical Dalit youth mobilization into a statewide mass movement.
A large-scale shutdown of colleges and a major student-led march in July 1977 intensified the Namantar struggle, marking a shift from localized demands to broader confrontations across Marathwada over Ambedkarite symbolism and Dalit political assertion.
The Namantar Andolan is widely dated as beginning on 27 July 1978, triggering sustained protest cycles and retaliatory violence against Dalit and Navayana Buddhist communities across Marathwada; the agitation became a central arena for radical Dalit organizing in Maharashtra through the early 1980s.
