H. H. Risley, a leading colonial ethnographer, was seconded as Census Commissioner for the 1901 census, pushing for ethnographic inquiry and comparative ranking of castes—an approach that intensified “scientific” social categorization within census operations.
The 1901 Census of India was documented in a multi-part report (published shortly after enumeration), including ethnographic appendices supporting the report’s caste chapter—an influential reference point for later colonial administrative “precedence” debates.
Risley’s The People of India (1908) repackaged and circulated census-era ethnographic and classificatory ideas to a broad administrative readership, reinforcing the linkage between census categories and colonial knowledge production about caste.
The 1911 census maintained caste/tribe recording practices within the decennial system, extending the long-running administrative project of standardizing community labels for governance, statistics, and policy debate.
For the 1921 census, a major Vol. I Report was produced under J. T. Marten (published 1924). This report is part of the documentary record through which caste and related social classifications were normalized as statistical objects.
The 1931 census is widely cited as the last decennial census of British India to publish granular, all-India caste tables at scale. It became a key baseline for later debates on caste demography and representation.
Post-enumeration Census 1931 reports were issued in the early 1930s. For example, a Jammu & Kashmir volume (published 1933) lists tabulations including race, tribe and caste, illustrating the administrative afterlife of census classifications in printed reference works.
Later summaries of colonial census practice frequently cite the 1931 count of thousands of named castes (often reported as 4,147) to illustrate how the census expanded and formalized jati listings into standardized administrative categories.
