At Old Sarum on 1 August 1086, William received oaths of fealty from major landholders (and at least some subtenants), asserting a direct loyalty tie to the crown that cut across intermediate lordship.

In 1166, the crown required tenants-in-chief to declare knights enfeoffed and those held in demesne. The returns show how military obligations were quantified through knights’ fees—central to mature English feudal organization.
