Construction of the covered market complex that became the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) began soon after the Ottoman conquest, as part of a broader effort to stimulate commerce in the capital. The early bazaar’s secure bedestens supported long-distance trade and urban wholesaling.
Sultan Mehmed II ordered the construction of the Cevahir/İç (Inner) Bedesten, a secure domed market hall for high-value goods. It became the nucleus around which the Grand Bazaar and many craft-and-merchant groupings (by trade) clustered.
A second domed bedesten, later known as the Sandal Bedesten, was built near the Inner Bedesten, expanding the secure wholesale/retail core and helping organize specialized market streets by commodity and trade.
Ottoman authorities regularly used narh (state-imposed maximum prices) to regulate essentials and services, shaping guild conduct, market access, and Istanbul’s broader provisioning regime by linking court enforcement to everyday urban commerce.
The gedik system—exclusive usufruct/operating rights that could function like monopolistic licenses—expanded in Istanbul from the 17th century, strengthening guild control over entry, shop locations (often waqf property), and production capacity.
Work began on the Egyptian Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) as part of the New Mosque complex, designed to fund the külliye through rents and trade. It became a major node for Istanbul’s import distribution—especially spices and medicinal goods—within a regulated urban marketplace.
Hatice Turhan Sultan revived the long-stalled New Mosque (Yeni Cami) project, restructuring its complex to include revenue-producing commercial facilities. This decision tied monumental construction to Istanbul’s mercantile infrastructure via waqf-financed shops and market space.
The Egyptian Bazaar was completed (commonly dated to the mid-1660s), consolidating a covered, rent-bearing market integrated into a waqf complex. It helped formalize commodity-specific retailing and merchant clustering in Eminönü.
The 1703 Edirne Incident began as a janissary revolt but widened to include civilians and artisans, reflecting how Istanbul’s urban groups—including guild-affiliated trades—could become decisive political actors during fiscal and legitimacy crises.
In the late 18th century, gediks increasingly functioned as transferable, monetized entitlements—traded and pledged—linking guild privilege to credit and informal finance and reshaping how urban commercial property and shop rights circulated.
By the mid-18th century, the Egyptian Bazaar was widely known as the Spice Bazaar, reflecting a stronger association between the covered market’s identity and its commodity specialization—an outcome of both trade flows and the clustering practices of urban commerce.
The 22 May 1766 earthquake caused widespread destruction in Istanbul, including reported damage to the Grand Bazaar, illustrating the vulnerability of dense commercial districts and the recurring need for repairs that affected shop tenure and urban trade continuity.
