A Shanxi merchants’ guild hall complex was built in Zhangye (Gansu) during the Yongzheng era, illustrating how Shanxi merchant communities created huiguan-style institutions (often centered on Guan Yu worship and a theatre stage) to coordinate business, social life, and mutual aid far from home.
The Qing–Russian Treaty of Kyakhta established regulated border markets and helped institutionalize the caravan trade in goods such as tea and furs, forming an important external-commercial context later exploited by Shanxi (Jin) merchant networks along the overland “Tea Road.”
Construction began on the Qiao Family Compound in Qi County, a prominent Shanxi merchant-family residence later associated with financier Qiao Zhiyong. Such elite courtyard compounds reflect the accumulation of wealth and local prestige that Shanxi merchant networks could achieve in the High Qing period.
Work began on the Shanxi–Shaanxi Guild Hall at Sheqi (Henan) during the Qianlong reign. The long-lived construction project underscores the scale and durability of merchant-guild institutions that supported itinerant trade, dispute mediation, ritual life, and networking across regions.
By no later than the Qianlong reign, Shanxi merchants were particularly active in regional salt markets (e.g., the Lu salt trade). The salt trade remained a key commercial arena in which Shanxi merchant firms and their associations could consolidate capital and connections.
In Pingyao (central Shanxi), the firm later known as Rishengchang was reorganized into a specialized remittance/draft bank (piaohao). This is widely treated as the first major piaohao and became a foundational node for Shanxi-led interregional finance in the 19th century.
As the Taiping Rebellion disrupted transport routes and fiscal transfers, piaohao increasingly handled government remittances and related financial services. This strengthened Shanxi banks’ institutional importance beyond private trade into state-linked fiscal operations.
Following Rishengchang’s example, additional piaohao were established in Shanxi—especially around Pingyao and neighboring counties—helping turn the central Shanxi basin into a major hub for interprovincial remittances and merchant credit networks.
The likin (lijin) internal transit tax was introduced (initially around Yangzhou) to raise funds for armies fighting the Taiping. As a major domestic customs-style levy on goods in transit, likin shaped long-distance commerce and the cost environment in which merchant and banking networks operated.
After extended, multi-stage building, the Sheqi Shanxi–Shaanxi Guild Hall was completed. Its completion highlights how guild halls could function as enduring merchant infrastructures—combining assembly spaces, ritual facilities, and public-facing cultural venues.
By the end of the 19th century, Shanxi-associated piaohao expanded into a nationwide branch system (often summarized as 32 firms with 475 branches), making central Shanxi a de facto financial center for many interregional remittance flows in late Qing China.
During the Boxer Rebellion (1900), when the Qing court fled to Xi’an, provincial remittances and travel expenses were routed through Shanxi piaohao networks; accounts commonly highlight Rishengchang’s handling of major remittance workloads during this crisis.
