The National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, a foundational revolutionary text. Its universal language intensified political conflict in Saint-Domingue over who counted as citizens and what “rights” meant in a slave society.
Free man of color Vincent Ogé led an armed challenge for political equality in Saint-Domingue; the revolt was suppressed and Ogé executed. The episode underscored the colony’s escalating crisis over race, rights, and power.
A clandestine gathering at Bois Caïman (often dated to mid-August 1791) became a powerful organizing and symbolic moment preceding the general uprising in the North. Later retellings made it central to Haitian revolutionary memory.
Enslaved people in the Northern Plain launched a coordinated uprising (often dated to the night of 21–22 August 1791), igniting what became the Haitian Revolution and transforming debates on emancipation into a military and political reality.
Facing invasion threats and civil war, republican commissioners moved toward emancipation to secure Black military support. Sonthonax proclaimed abolition in the North (Aug. 1793), followed by Polverel in the West and South (Oct. 1793).

Napoleon Bonaparte sent a major expedition under General Charles Leclerc to reassert metropolitan control over Saint-Domingue. The campaign escalated into brutal warfare and set the stage for a final break with France.
The Law of 20 May 1802 reinstated slavery in French colonies where emancipation had not been fully implemented and underpinned wider efforts to rebuild a plantation empire. News and fear of re-enslavement hardened opposition in Saint-Domingue.
After months of conflict and shifting alliances, Toussaint Louverture was seized by French forces and deported to France. His removal eliminated a central leader of the emancipation regime but did not end resistance in Saint-Domingue.
At Vertières, Haitian revolutionary forces under Jean-Jacques Dessalines won the last major battle against the French expedition. The defeat accelerated French evacuation and cleared the path for formal independence.
Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the independence of Haiti (formerly Saint-Domingue) at Gonaïves. The act culminated the revolution into the first enduring state born from a successful slave uprising and definitively ended French rule in the colony.
