Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão reached the mouth of the Congo (Zaire) River, initiating sustained Atlantic contact that soon expanded into diplomacy, missionary activity, and slave trading links between Kongo and Portugal.
On a subsequent stage of the voyage, Cão reached Kongo in 1483, met Kongo notables, and brought some back to Portugal—an early pattern of reciprocal (but asymmetrical) diplomatic exchange that preceded formal embassies and conversion efforts.
A formal Portuguese embassy arrived, and the manikongo Nzinga a Nkuwu was baptized as João I on 3 May 1491. This marked a decisive diplomatic-religious turn that tied elite politics in Kongo to Portuguese clergy, material support, and emerging Atlantic commerce.
Nzinga a Nlaza, baptized as Queen Leonor on 5 June 1491, became an important court advocate of Christianity—illustrating how conversion politics also involved royal women and court factions, not only kings and missionaries.
After João I’s death, Mvemba a Nzinga (Afonso) defeated his rival claimant Mpanzu a Kitima and became ruler, consolidating Christianity at the center of royal legitimacy and deepening Portugal–Kongo political ties.

On 29 October 1665, Portuguese forces defeated Kongo at Mbwila and killed King António I. The battle destabilized central authority and helped precipitate prolonged succession conflict, intensifying political fragmentation and vulnerability to slave raiding and export.
After Mbwila, a succession struggle escalated into the Kongo Civil War (1665–1709) between rival lineages and regional factions. In this period, warfare and factional politics contributed to the sale of many Bakongo into the Atlantic slave trade.
Prophet Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita (founder of Antonianism) was executed on 2 July 1706 by forces loyal to Pedro IV, with Capuchin involvement noted in accounts. Pedro IV defeated Antonian-aligned forces at São Salvador (Mbanza Kongo) on 15 February 1709, reoccupying the capital and marking a major step toward reunification after decades of civil war.
Following unrest during the reign of Manuel III (1911–1914), Portuguese authorities abolished the kingdom in 1914 and assimilated its remaining territory into colonial Angola—closing the long arc of Kongo’s Atlantic-era diplomacy, conversion politics, and involvement in slave systems under expanding European imperial power.
