Fidel Castro and fellow rebels attacked the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba (and a related action in Bayamo). The assault failed militarily, but it became the symbolic beginning of the Cuban Revolution and later gave its name to the 26th of July Movement.
During his trial for the Moncada attack, Castro delivered his defense speech later known as History Will Absolve Me, which circulated as a political manifesto and helped define the movement’s program and legitimacy claims.
After imprisonment following Moncada, Castro and other rebels were released under a political amnesty in 1955, enabling the leadership to regroup and prepare a renewed armed effort from exile.
Castro and 81 other insurgents sailed from Mexico on the yacht Granma and disembarked in eastern Cuba. The landing re-ignited armed struggle on the island and led to the establishment of a guerrilla foco in the Sierra Maestra after severe early losses.
The 26th of July Movement called a general strike (with accompanying armed actions) aimed at toppling Batista. The strike did not fully materialize nationwide and was suppressed, pushing the opposition toward intensified guerrilla and coordinated insurgent tactics.
Batista’s forces began Operation Verano, a major summer offensive intended to destroy Castro’s guerrillas in the Sierra Maestra. Its failure weakened the regime’s military position and helped set conditions for the rebels’ later advance.
Rebel forces under Ernesto “Che” Guevara and others captured Santa Clara. The defeat was a decisive blow to Batista’s remaining control and immediately preceded his flight from the country.
Fulgencio Batista fled Cuba as revolutionary forces closed in. The collapse of the Batista government marked the revolutionary takeover and opened the way for rapid political and institutional transformation.
After advancing across the island, Castro arrived in Havana, cementing the revolution’s control of the capital and accelerating the consolidation of a new revolutionary state apparatus.
Cuba enacted its first major agrarian reform, limiting large estates and expropriating land beyond set caps. The law became a cornerstone of early revolutionary social transformation and a major source of conflict with domestic elites and U.S. interests.
In retaliation amid escalating U.S.–Cuba economic conflict, Cuba expropriated major U.S. enterprises (including sugar mills and associated lands). These actions deepened the break with the United States and advanced state control of key sectors.
The United States broke diplomatic relations with Cuba, closing its embassy in Havana amid escalating disputes over nationalizations, Soviet ties, and mutual accusations. The rupture set the stage for subsequent covert and overt confrontation.
On the eve of the Bay of Pigs invasion, Castro publicly proclaimed the socialist character of the revolution, signaling a definitive ideological turn and tighter alignment with the socialist bloc as confrontation with the U.S. intensified.
A U.S.-backed force of Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos/Playa Girón) in an attempt to overthrow Castro’s government. The invasion failed within days, strengthening the regime and accelerating security and institutional centralization.
Cuba merged key revolutionary forces—including the 26th of July Movement, the Popular Socialist Party, and the Revolutionary Directorate—into the Integrated Revolutionary Organizations (ORI), an important step toward a unified ruling-party structure.
The nationwide 1961 literacy campaign concluded with a public declaration that Cuba had become a territory free of illiteracy, showcasing mass mobilization capacity and supporting the revolution’s claims of social achievement.
After internal conflict and purges, the ORI was reorganized as the United Party of the Socialist Revolution of Cuba (PURSC), further institutionalizing one-party governance under revolutionary leadership.
The deployment of Soviet missiles in Cuba triggered a major Cold War confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. The crisis ended with a Soviet agreement to withdraw missiles and a U.S. pledge not to invade Cuba, reinforcing Cuba’s security dependence on the Soviet alliance.
Cuba approved a second agrarian reform tightening limits on private landholding and expanding state control over farmland. The measure pushed agricultural property relations further toward socialist ownership and planning.
The PURSC was dissolved and replaced by the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), formalizing a more orthodox party structure as the revolution’s central political institution and consolidating the governing model that would be embedded in later constitutional arrangements.
Cuban Revolution and Early Socialist Transformation (1953–1965)
