Pope John Paul II arrived on 2 June 1979 for his first pilgrimage to communist Poland, a major public and religious event that strengthened social solidarity outside state structures.
On 31 August 1980, accords reached with striking workers in Gdańsk sanctioned the creation of free and independent trade unions, enabling the emergence of Solidarity as a mass social movement.
On 13 December 1981, the government under Wojciech Jaruzelski imposed martial law, deploying security forces, restricting movement and communications, and interning thousands of opposition activists.

On 29 December 1989, parliament adopted constitutional changes that removed provisions guaranteeing the communist party’s leading role and changed the state’s official name back to the Republic of Poland, marking the formal end of the PRL framework.
