The Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville) became independent from Belgium. Patrice Lumumba became prime minister and Joseph Kasa-Vubu became president, but the new state inherited a weak administration and a divided national army. Independence was the starting point for the political and security crisis that followed.
Soldiers in the Force Publique (the national army) mutinied soon after independence, protesting continued Belgian command and unequal conditions. Violence and disorder spread, undermining the central government and prompting outside intervention. The mutiny helped turn political tensions into a fast-moving security crisis.
Katanga, the mineral-rich southern province, declared itself independent under Moïse Tshombe. The secession weakened the new Congolese state and drew in Belgian interests and other foreign involvement. Restoring territorial unity became a central goal of the crisis.
At the Congolese government’s request, the UN Security Council authorized a major peacekeeping mission: the United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC). Its early tasks included helping restore order and supporting the withdrawal of Belgian troops. ONUC soon became a key actor in Congo’s internal power struggle.
A second breakaway, South Kasai, was declared under Albert Kalonji. This added another front to Congo’s political and military crisis and increased communal violence in the Kasai region. The central government’s authority continued to erode as rival administrations emerged.
President Kasa-Vubu announced he had dismissed Prime Minister Lumumba. Lumumba contested the move, and the country effectively had competing claims to legitimate national leadership. The split made it easier for military leaders to intervene and pushed Congo closer to open conflict.
Army chief Joseph-Désiré Mobutu seized control in a coup, claiming he would “neutralize” rival political leaders. The move sidelined both Lumumba and his opponents while keeping Kasa-Vubu in place as president. It marked a major turning point toward military influence over civilian government.
After escaping house arrest, Lumumba tried to travel to Stanleyville to rally political support. He was captured by forces loyal to Mobutu and detained. His arrest removed the most prominent nationalist leader from active politics and set the stage for his transfer to Katanga.
Lumumba’s ally Antoine Gizenga set up a rival administration in Stanleyville (in eastern Congo). This “Congo-Stanleyville” government challenged the Léopoldville authorities and drew foreign attention, intensifying Cold War pressures. The existence of two centers of power prolonged the crisis and complicated UN efforts.
Lumumba was transferred to Katanga and executed the same day, along with Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito. His death caused international outrage and hardened political divisions inside Congo. It also increased pressure on the UN to prevent wider civil war and foreign-backed violence.
The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 161, urging immediate measures to prevent civil war and calling for the removal of foreign military and mercenary personnel not under UN command. The resolution also called for an investigation into Lumumba’s death. This shift signaled a more forceful and politically sensitive UN role in the crisis.
UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld was killed when his plane crashed near Ndola while traveling to talks linked to the Katanga conflict. His death added uncertainty to UN diplomacy and became part of the crisis’s broader legacy of disputed events and competing narratives. The UN continued operations under new leadership.
UN forces launched Operation Grandslam against Katangan forces, aiming to end the province’s breakaway status. The offensive succeeded militarily and led to Katanga’s reintegration into the Congo. Ending Katanga’s secession was a major step toward restoring territorial unity, though it did not end rebellion elsewhere.
President Kasa-Vubu appointed Moïse Tshombe as prime minister, bringing the former Katanga secessionist leader back into national government. Tshombe sought foreign support and used mercenaries as the state fought the Simba rebellion and related uprisings. His return improved the government’s military capacity but increased political controversy.
A new constitution, known as the Luluabourg Constitution, came into force and renamed the country the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also reshaped national institutions after years of political breakdown. The constitutional change was meant to stabilize governance, but armed conflict continued in parts of the country.
Belgian paratroopers, supported by U.S. transport aircraft, conducted Operation Dragon Rouge to retake Stanleyville and rescue hostages held during the Simba rebellion. Many hostages were saved, but some were killed during the fighting and chaos. The operation highlighted Congo’s reliance on foreign military help and fueled political backlash.
Kasa-Vubu removed Tshombe from the prime ministership, reflecting deep divisions over security policy, legitimacy, and foreign involvement. The dismissal did not resolve the broader governing crisis and instead increased instability at the top of the state. Political bargaining and institutional paralysis continued into late 1965.
Mobutu carried out a largely bloodless coup, removed Kasa-Vubu, and took control of the state. The takeover ended the 1960–1965 period of competing governments and repeated leadership changes, replacing it with centralized military-backed rule. While rebellions and violence persisted in some areas, the crisis’s main political struggle shifted into a new era under Mobutu.
