At the Belgo-Congolese Round Table Conference in Brussels, Belgian and Congolese leaders agreed that the Congo would become independent on 30 June 1960. The meeting created the rushed timetable that left many institutions—especially the army and civil service—unprepared for a rapid transfer of power.
Belgium adopted the Loi fondamentale (Fundamental Law) to set up the Congo’s transitional political structure for independence. It provided the basic constitutional rules for offices like president and prime minister, but left key powers unclear—an issue that later fed a major constitutional showdown.
A national parliamentary election was held to form a government for the soon-to-be independent Congo. Lumumba’s MNC won a plurality, and coalition talks followed as leaders tried to build a workable government in a fragmented political landscape.
Patrice Lumumba took office as prime minister, leading a coalition government on the eve of independence. He faced immediate pressure to unify rival parties and regions while trying to build authority over an administration still shaped by colonial rule.
The Congo became independent from Belgium on 30 June 1960, with Joseph Kasa-Vubu as president and Lumumba as prime minister. Lumumba’s independence-day speech publicly highlighted the harms of colonial rule and signaled a more assertive nationalist course, shaping how many Congolese and foreign governments viewed the new administration.
Soldiers in the Force Publique (the national army) mutinied against their white officers, and unrest spread quickly. The breakdown of military discipline undermined the new government’s credibility and helped spark the broader Congo Crisis.
The UN Security Council recommended the Congo’s admission to the United Nations, a diplomatic step that affirmed its new international status. Membership raised expectations that the UN would help protect Congo’s sovereignty while it struggled with internal breakdown and secession.
Moïse Tshombe proclaimed the mineral-rich province of Katanga independent, deepening the crisis over Congo’s territorial unity. Belgian troops intervened in the country during this period, and Congolese leaders viewed Katanga’s secession as a major threat to sovereignty.
The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 143, authorizing the Secretary-General to provide military assistance to the Congolese government and calling for Belgian troop withdrawal. This launched ONUC, one of the UN’s largest early peacekeeping missions, and made the Congo crisis a major international issue.
President Kasa-Vubu announced he had dismissed Prime Minister Lumumba and several ministers. Lumumba rejected the dismissal as illegitimate, and rival claims to legal authority split the government, setting the stage for military intervention in politics.
Colonel Joseph-Désiré Mobutu announced a “peaceful revolution” that suspended parliament and sidelined both Lumumba and Kasa-Vubu. Power shifted toward the army and a group of appointed administrators, sharply limiting Lumumba’s ability to govern or communicate with supporters.
Lumumba fled house arrest but was recaptured by Mobutu’s forces on 1 December 1960 and later held at a military camp at Thysville. His arrest removed him from the political contest inside the capital and made his personal safety dependent on hostile forces.
Lumumba ally Antoine Gizenga declared a competing government in Stanleyville (Orientale Province), claiming to be the legitimate authority. This formalized the country’s political fragmentation and turned the crisis into a multi-sided struggle for national control.
Lumumba, along with Joseph Okito and Maurice Mpolo, was flown to Katanga and executed by a Katangan firing squad under Belgian supervision. His killing removed the most prominent nationalist leader of independence and became a defining event of the Congo Crisis, shaping Congolese politics and international debate for decades.
