Republics of Congo gain independence
Labels: Republic of, DRCIn 1960, two new states emerged from French and Belgian colonial rule: the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) and the Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville), later renamed Zaire and then the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Independence opened political space for women’s organizing, but it also brought intense instability that shaped early post-colonial activism. Women’s movements developed in close contact with changing party systems and state power in both countries.
