The Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville) became independent from Belgium, but the transition quickly turned unstable. A mutiny in the national army and Belgian military interventions helped trigger a wider political and security breakdown that set the stage for Katanga’s secession.
Moïse Tshombe announced that the mineral-rich province of Katanga would break away as a separate state. The move threatened Congo’s territorial integrity and immediately became a central issue in the wider Congo Crisis.
The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 143, calling for Belgian troop withdrawal and authorizing UN military assistance to the Congolese government. This created the legal basis for the UN Operation in the Congo (ONUC), which later confronted the Katanga secession.
UN Security Council Resolution 146 confirmed the Secretary-General’s authority to carry out earlier decisions and called for Belgium to withdraw troops from Katanga. It also stated that UN forces entering Katanga were necessary to implement the UN mandate, increasing direct UN involvement there.
With Security Council members divided over Congo, Resolution 157 called for an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly. The international dispute over how to respond to Congo’s internal conflict affected how strongly the UN could act against secession in Katanga.
Former Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba was transferred to Élisabethville in Katanga and killed near there. His death deepened mistrust between Congolese factions and sharpened the UN’s focus on preventing civil war and reducing foreign and mercenary involvement—issues closely tied to Katanga’s security forces.
UN Security Council Resolution 161 urged the UN to take steps to prevent civil war, including the possible use of force as a last resort. It also called for the withdrawal and denial of support to foreign military personnel and mercenaries not under UN control—an important pressure point on Katanga’s armed capacity.
ONUC carried out raids in Élisabethville and other locations to arrest European mercenaries working for Katanga and to seize key assets such as aircraft. The operation showed the UN shifting from monitoring to direct action against the military structures supporting secession.
ONUC began Operation Morthor to weaken Katanga’s ability to resist reunification, leading to days of intense clashes in and around Élisabethville. The fighting increased international controversy about the UN mandate and raised the costs of continuing the secession.
UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld was killed when his plane crashed near Ndola while traveling to negotiate a ceasefire connected to the Katanga conflict. His death highlighted how central—and dangerous—the Katanga dispute had become for international diplomacy and peacekeeping.
Security Council Resolution 169 condemned Katanga’s secessionist activities and authorized stronger action to apprehend and deport foreign mercenaries. This gave additional political backing for the UN to dismantle the external military support that helped keep Katanga separate.
ONUC carried out Operation Unokat in Élisabethville, defeating Katangese forces and reasserting UN freedom of movement. The setback pushed Tshombe toward negotiations, showing that the UN was prepared to use force to end the secession.
Under mounting pressure, Tshombe signed the Kitona Declaration, indicating recognition of the central Congolese government and a commitment to work toward ending secession. Implementation then stalled, but the agreement marked a clear shift from outright separation to negotiation over terms.
After renewed violence in late December 1962, ONUC launched Operation Grandslam and quickly advanced against Katangese gendarmerie and mercenary units. The operation captured key towns and broke Katanga’s ability to defend its separate state structure.
Facing decisive UN military pressure, Tshombe sent a message stating he was ready to proclaim that Katanga’s secession was ended. This announcement signaled the collapse of the breakaway government’s position and opened the way for formal surrender and reintegration steps.
Tshombe signed a formal instrument of surrender with UN officials, and Katanga was reintegrated into the Congo. The end of the secession shifted the crisis toward rebuilding national authority, while leaving behind an armed legacy that later fed further unrest.
