The Congo Free State and the Compagnie du Katanga created the Comité Spécial du Katanga (CSK) to administer Katanga and manage major land and mineral rights. This structure helped centralize control over mining concessions and set up the legal and financial framework that later enabled large-scale corporate mining in the region.
Union Minière du Haut-Katanga (UMHK) was created as a joint venture involving the CSK, Compagnie du Katanga, and Tanganyika Concessions. With colonial-state support, UMHK received major concessions in Katanga, laying the foundation for a company-dominated mining economy built around copper and other minerals.
Belgium annexed the Congo Free State, creating the Belgian Congo. Although sovereignty shifted from Leopold II’s personal rule to the Belgian state, concession-based mining structures in Katanga continued, and UMHK’s operations expanded within this colonial governance system.
The Shinkolobwe mine in Katanga began operating, first valued mainly for radium (used in early medical treatments) and later for uranium. Its exceptionally rich ore would eventually make it one of the world’s most strategically important uranium sources.
UMHK shut down Shinkolobwe after building stockpiles of radium- and uranium-bearing ore for anticipated demand. This decision mattered later because the stockpiles (already above ground) could be acquired and moved quickly once uranium became a wartime priority.
In December 1941, UMHK workers across Katanga struck over wages and conditions during wartime production. Colonial authorities fired on strikers in Jadotville and at a stadium gathering in Élisabethville, killing dozens; the episode became a major turning point in Congolese labor and political awareness under colonial rule.
As World War II reshaped resource priorities, U.S. officials sought reliable uranium supplies for what became the Manhattan Project. UMHK’s leadership and existing Congo ore stockpiles positioned the company as a key supplier once formal procurement began.
With wartime demand rising, Shinkolobwe operations were restarted and expanded to resume large-scale uranium production. This helped secure sustained supply for U.S. nuclear weapons development, tying Katanga’s colonial mining system directly to global military technology.
The Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville) became independent from Belgium, but political crisis followed almost immediately. Katanga’s secession, led by Moïse Tshombe, was financially backed by UMHK and supported by Belgium, reflecting how mining interests shaped the struggle over the new state’s authority and revenue base.
Under Mobutu, Congo adopted measures to reassert national control over land and mineral rights that had been granted under colonial rule. The Bakajika law approach became a legal basis for revising or reclaiming pre-independence concessions, increasing direct state leverage over companies like UMHK.
Mobutu nationalized UMHK’s Congo-based operations and created a new state company, Gecomin, to run the mines. The abrupt shift triggered a management and staffing crisis as UMHK personnel withdrew, showing how dependent the mining system was on colonial-era corporate expertise and networks.
By the late 1960s, UMHK no longer controlled Katanga’s mining operations; its role was replaced by state-controlled structures that evolved from Gecomin into later forms, including Gécamines. This marked the end of UMHK’s 1906–1966/67 colonial-to-postcolonial dominance and the start of a new phase: state-led mining tied to Mobutu’s political economy.
