Menelik II and Italian envoy Count Pietro Antonelli signed the Treaty of Wuchale, intended as a friendship and border agreement. Conflicting Amharic and Italian texts—especially over whether Ethiopia may or must use Italy for foreign relations—set the stage for a major diplomatic rupture and later war.
Following Emperor Yohannes IV’s death earlier in 1889, Menelik II was crowned emperor, strengthening his authority to pursue southern expansion, centralize administration, and negotiate (and later contest) European diplomatic claims.
Italy asserted that the Wuchale treaty made Ethiopia an Italian protectorate; Menelik rejected that interpretation, explicitly repudiating the protectorate claim as tensions escalated along the Eritrean frontier.

Menelik II’s army decisively defeated Italian forces at Adwa, ending the immediate threat of colonization. The victory strengthened the monarchy’s legitimacy and underpinned subsequent diplomacy that recognized Ethiopia’s sovereignty—while the empire continued consolidating newly conquered southern territories.
Italy and Ethiopia signed the Treaty of Addis Ababa, which abrogated the Treaty of Wuchale and ended the First Italo-Ethiopian War. Italy recognized Ethiopia’s independence, allowing Menelik to pursue consolidation with enhanced diplomatic legitimacy.
After sustained resistance by Kaffa’s last king, the kingdom was annexed into the Ethiopian Empire in 1897, extending Menelik’s authority into the southwest and strengthening imperial control over important trade and resource zones.
Menelik II and Great Britain concluded an agreement addressing commerce and frontier issues in the Somali region. The treaty became a key diplomatic instrument used to support Ethiopia’s claims in the Ogaden and reflected Menelik’s strategy of pairing conquest with international boundary-making.
Ras Welde Giyorgis carried Menelik’s consolidation drive southward; during the expedition, Ethiopian forces symbolically claimed presence on both shores of Lake Turkana, reflecting the empire’s push to preempt competing colonial ambitions in borderlands.
Italy and Ethiopia signed a convention to delimit the frontier between Eritrea and Ethiopia, addressing a major unresolved issue after the 1896 peace. The agreement anchored boundary lines (notably including Mareb–Belesa–Muna) within Menelik’s broader program of territorial consolidation and diplomatic stabilization.
