A group of young army officers launched Nigeria’s first coup attempt, targeting senior political and military figures across the country and triggering the collapse of civilian authority in the First Republic.
In the immediate aftermath of the coup attempt, Nigeria’s remaining civilian authorities formally ceded administration to the army, marking the end of the First Republic’s effective control.

The January coup’s killing pattern and ensuing political-military decisions deepened ethnic and regional suspicions inside the armed forces, helping set conditions for retaliatory action by northern officers later in 1966.
Widespread attacks against Igbo and other southerners in Northern Nigeria began in May 1966, producing mass casualties and displacement and sharply worsening the national crisis after the January coup.

The anti-Igbo pogroms reached another major peak in late September 1966, reinforcing Eastern Region secessionist pressures and the drift toward civil war.
Efforts by the Gowon government to convene discussions on Nigeria’s constitutional future were derailed as continuing massacres and intercommunal violence made national compromise increasingly difficult.
