A group of army officers carried out a coup d’état that ended Nigeria’s First Republic. The coup and its aftermath intensified regional and ethnic mistrust that later fed into the secession crisis.
A counter-coup within the military further destabilized the country and worsened violence and fear across regions, accelerating the political breakdown that preceded war.
Federal and Eastern leaders met in Aburi, Ghana (the Aburi Accord) in a last major attempt to negotiate a political settlement. Disagreement over implementation later contributed to the slide toward secession and war.

Federal forces took Enugu, Biafra’s capital, forcing Biafran leadership and administration to relocate and underscoring the federal advantage early in the conflict.
As war disrupted finance and supply, Biafra issued its own currency, the Biafran pound, reflecting the secessionist government’s attempt to operate as a sovereign state under blockade conditions.
Nigeria captured Port Harcourt, a key port and oil-centered city, tightening the economic and logistical squeeze on Biafra and weakening its ability to sustain the war effort.
In late 1969 federal forces launched a decisive endgame offensive; Umuahia, an important Biafran center during the war’s final phase, fell by Christmas Eve, accelerating Biafra’s collapse.
Nigeria’s final major campaign (Operation Tail-Wind) captured Owerri and the Uli airstrip area, cutting remaining Biafran lifelines and bringing organized resistance to the brink of surrender.
As defeat became imminent, Ojukwu left Biafra for exile in Côte d’Ivoire, transferring authority as Biafra moved toward capitulation.
Biafran representatives formally surrendered to the federal government in Lagos, ending the secessionist attempt and marking the close of the war’s active phase.
In a postwar national message, Head of State Yakubu Gowon advanced the reconciliation formula “no victor, no vanquished,” framing reintegration and national rebuilding after the conflict.
