Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko died on 12 September 1977 after being detained and severely injured in police custody, becoming a major rallying point for renewed internal and international opposition to apartheid repression.
On 19 October 1977, the apartheid government banned a large set of Black Consciousness-aligned organizations and shut down key newspapers (including The World and Weekend World), while detaining prominent activists—an attempt to decapitate youth-led resistance networks after Soweto.
The Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) formed as a successor vehicle for Black Consciousness politics after the 1977 bannings, providing a new organizational home for activists in the late 1970s.
At a conference in Roodepoort, AZAPO elected a national executive (with Curtis Nkondo as president), consolidating a post-banning organizational structure for Black Consciousness-aligned activism.
