Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed himself the Hongwu Emperor and established the Ming dynasty, making Nanjing the capital. This marked the replacement of Mongol-led Yuan rule with a native Chinese dynasty and set the political framework for Ming institutions.
Ming armies entered Dadu (the Yuan capital, later known as Beijing), and the last Yuan emperor fled north. This was a major step in ending Yuan control in China and helped the Ming expand authority across the north.
Ming campaigns finished bringing major remaining regions under central control, including Yunnan. With unification largely complete, the court could focus more on building administration, taxation, and long-term defense.
The Hongwu Emperor died, and his grandson Zhu Yunwen soon took the throne as the Jianwen Emperor. The succession opened a struggle over how much power imperial princes should hold—an issue that quickly turned into civil war.
Zhu Di, the Prince of Yan, fought the Ming central government in the Jingnan campaign and captured Nanjing. The Jianwen Emperor disappeared in the crisis, and Zhu Di took power, reshaping the dynasty’s direction and legitimacy debates.
Under the Yongle Emperor, Admiral Zheng He led a massive fleet on the first of seven voyages across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. These expeditions projected Ming power, expanded tribute and diplomatic ties, and supported maritime trade networks.
The main palace complex in Beijing—later known as the Forbidden City—was completed. Its construction supported the court’s long-term plan to govern from the north and defend against steppe threats more directly.
Beijing was formally made the national capital, with the court shifting its center of power away from Nanjing. This change linked Ming governance more tightly to northern frontier defense and to the logistical challenge of moving grain and supplies from the south.
In a disastrous frontier campaign, Oirat Mongol forces defeated Ming troops and captured the Zhengtong Emperor. The crisis shocked the court, exposed weaknesses in military leadership, and forced emergency decisions about defense and succession.
The court promoted the Single Whip reform across the empire, consolidating many taxes and labor obligations into one payment, usually in silver. The change simplified collection in many places, but it also tied state finance more closely to the supply and flow of silver.
Nurhaci declared himself khan and established the Later Jin state, building a new military-political power on the Ming northeast frontier. This marked the rise of the force that would soon challenge Ming defenses and eventually become the Qing dynasty.
Rebel forces under Li Zicheng took Beijing during the Jiashen Incident, and the Chongzhen Emperor died as Ming rule in the capital collapsed. The fall of the capital was a turning point that ended Ming control in north China and triggered rapid political realignment.
At Shanhai Pass, Ming general Wu Sangui allied with Qing regent Dorgon to defeat Li Zicheng’s forces. The battle enabled Qing armies to enter Beijing soon after and begin establishing a new dynasty over China proper.
