After taking the throne, Taizu moved against competing kingdoms that had formed during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. His campaigns and diplomacy started the long process of bringing most of China back under one central government. This early consolidation strengthened the new dynasty’s ability to raise revenue and govern through a nationwide bureaucracy.
In a military coup known as the Chenqiao Mutiny, the general Zhao Kuangyin was proclaimed emperor. He took the reign title Emperor Taizu and founded the Song dynasty, aiming to reunify China after decades of regional division. This shift also set a pattern of trying to keep the military under tighter civilian control.
Soon after defeating Northern Han, the Song tried to press north toward areas held by the Khitan-led Liao, including the strategic “Sixteen Prefectures.” The Song suffered a decisive defeat at the Gaoliang River near present-day Beijing, forcing a retreat. The loss helped lock in a long-term problem for Song security: a vulnerable northern frontier.
Song forces captured Taiyuan and ended the Northern Han state, removing the last major regime from the earlier era of fragmentation. This victory greatly reduced internal rivals and allowed the Song to focus more on powerful neighbors to the north. It also marked a major milestone in political reunification under Song rule.
After major fighting and a Liao invasion reaching deep into Song territory, the two states negotiated the Chanyuan Treaty. The agreement stabilized the border and created a framework for roughly a century of relatively steady relations. While it required the Song to make regular payments, it also reduced immediate military pressure and supported trade and diplomacy.
Under Emperor Shenzong, the official Wang Anshi pushed a major reform program called the New Policies. The changes aimed to strengthen state finances, improve local administration, and support defense by reshaping taxes, loans, and community responsibilities. The reforms also intensified political conflict at court, dividing officials into lasting factions.
Jurchen leaders rose against the Liao and established the Jin dynasty, creating a powerful new state on the Song’s northern border. This development changed the balance of power and opened a new, risky opportunity for the Song to weaken the Liao. It also introduced an opponent that would soon prove more dangerous than the Liao.
The Song allied with the Jurchen Jin in an arrangement often called the “Alliance Conducted at Sea,” coordinating attacks against the Liao. The Liao collapsed, but the alliance exposed Song military weakness and created disputes over territory and promises. With the common enemy gone, the relationship between Song and Jin quickly deteriorated.
Zhao Gou (Emperor Gaozong) escaped capture and rebuilt the Song court, beginning the Southern Song period. The government relocated toward the lower Yangtze region and relied more on naval power and river defenses. This shift preserved the dynasty but confirmed the long-term loss of the north to the Jin.
Jin forces attacked the Song, captured the capital Kaifeng, and seized the reigning emperor along with the retired emperor. The sack of the capital and mass abductions became known as the Jingkang Incident, a major political and social disaster. It ended the Northern Song and forced surviving leaders to rebuild the dynasty in the south.
Lin’an (modern Hangzhou) was designated as the main capital of the Southern Song, replacing the lost northern capital. The city grew into a major center of commerce and government for the dynasty’s southern-based economy. Making Lin’an the capital also signaled that the Southern Song was planning to endure, not just retreat temporarily.
After years of warfare, the Southern Song and the Jin agreed to peace terms later formalized in the Treaty of Shaoxing. The treaty fixed a boundary roughly along the Huai River region and required the Song to make regular tribute payments. It brought decades of relative stability, but at the cost of accepting the division of China.
Mongol forces began sustained campaigns against the Southern Song, starting a long conquest that unfolded over decades. The Song relied on fortified terrain, river systems, and a large navy, while the Mongols adapted by building siege capacity and using allies and defectors. This new war gradually replaced the Song–Jin struggle as the main threat to the dynasty’s survival.
Song loyalist forces made a final stand at sea near Yamen but were decisively defeated by Yuan forces. The last Song child-emperor died during the collapse, and organized resistance largely ended soon after. The battle is widely treated as the final endpoint of the Song dynasty and the completion of Yuan control over China proper.
