In 1036, Western Xia authorities commissioned a distinct Tangut writing system, associated with the official Yeli Renrong. The script helped the new empire run its government, educate officials, and translate major texts, especially Buddhist works. Creating a separate script also strengthened Tangut identity alongside the use of Chinese characters.
In 1038, the Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao stopped sending tribute to the Song dynasty and proclaimed himself emperor, establishing the Western Xia (Xi Xia) state. This marked a shift from a border vassal relationship to an independent empire centered on Xingqing (modern Yinchuan). The new dynasty used both Tangut and Chinese administrative practices to govern a multi-ethnic frontier region.
After the 1038 declaration of empire, conflict escalated between Western Xia and the Northern Song along the frontier. From 1040 to 1044, Western Xia forces launched major attacks and sieges, while the Song responded with campaigns and tightened border controls. The fighting showed how costly sustained war was for both states in the northwest.
In 1044, the Song and Western Xia concluded a peace settlement that ended the most intense phase of the early wars. The agreement stabilized the border for a time and allowed both sides to shift resources away from constant large-scale campaigning. It also reflected Western Xia’s ability to survive as a recognized power next to the Song.
After 1048, the child emperor Yizong took the throne, meaning court politics and regencies shaped policy for years. This period highlights how Western Xia governance depended on elite families and factional control, not only on the emperor’s personal authority. Despite internal challenges, the dynasty maintained its position on the frontier.
Li Yuanhao (Emperor Jingzong), the founder of Western Xia, died in 1048. His reign had built imperial institutions and expanded Western Xia’s influence, but also left the dynasty in a tense neighborhood of stronger states. The succession continued under later emperors, showing that the new empire had become more than a single leader’s project.
Around 1075–1076, the Baisigou Square Pagoda was built in the Western Xia realm (in today’s Ningxia). The site reflects Western Xia’s strong Buddhist institutions and its ability to support major religious construction projects. Centuries later, the pagoda would become famous for the Tangut texts found in its ruins.
Beginning in 1086, Emperor Chongzong ruled for decades, during which the court pursued further centralization and Chinese-style administration. His reign also saw renewed pressure and campaigns from neighboring powers, showing how Western Xia had to balance internal reforms with external defense. The dynasty’s survival depended on managing both frontier warfare and court politics.
In 1139, Emperor Renzong began the longest reign of Western Xia (1139–1193). He promoted education and official selection through schools and examinations, and supported both Confucian and Buddhist institutions. This era is often linked to cultural production in the Tangut script, including large-scale printing projects.
During or around Renzong’s reign, Tangut-language Buddhist texts were produced using printing methods identified as wooden movable type (printing with reusable characters). One important set, the Auspicious Tantra of All-Reaching Union, is often cited by Chinese specialists as an early surviving example of this technique. The evidence comes from physical printing traits and the later discovery of the volumes at Baisigou.
In 1205, Mongol forces began raiding Western Xia territory, a warning that larger campaigns might follow. These raids were tied to the Mongols’ expanding power and their interest in securing routes, tribute, and submission from neighboring states. For Western Xia, the raids marked the start of a conflict that would eventually end the dynasty.
In 1206, Emperor Huanzong was deposed in a coup and replaced by his cousin, Emperor Xiangzong. The power shift happened as a new threat was growing on the steppe: the rising Mongol empire. This internal instability made it harder for Western Xia to respond coherently to external pressure.
In 1209–1210, Genghis Khan launched a major invasion that advanced toward Western Xia’s capital region. The campaign showed the Mongols could operate effectively against fortified cities and river defenses, not only in open steppe battles. Western Xia was forced toward submission as the cost of resistance rose sharply.
By 1210, Western Xia was subjugated under Mongol pressure, ending its ability to act fully independently in foreign policy. Although the dynasty continued to exist, it now had to navigate Mongol demands while also dealing with other regional powers. This vassal-like status set the stage for the dynasty’s final destruction when relations collapsed later.
In 1225, the Mongols launched a renewed, punitive campaign against Western Xia, escalating from earlier subjugation to outright destruction. Mongol forces captured city after city, steadily reducing Western Xia’s defensive depth. This campaign made clear that the dynasty’s survival was no longer the Mongols’ goal.
In 1227, the last Western Xia ruler surrendered and was executed, and the Mongols pillaged the capital region (Xingqing/Yinchuan), effectively ending the dynasty. Western Xia territory was absorbed into the Mongol Empire, and many records and institutions were destroyed, helping explain why much of Tangut history is known through archaeology and surviving manuscripts. The fall of Western Xia closed a major chapter in the struggle over northwest China’s trade corridors and frontier states.
