Kublai Khan shifted the Mongol government’s center toward North China and ordered construction of a new walled capital at Dadu (in today’s Beijing). This helped the Mongol court govern China with a more permanent, city-based administration while still keeping a summer capital at Shangdu.
Kublai Khan officially adopted a Chinese-style dynastic title, naming his regime the “Great Yuan.” The new name signaled a shift from steppe empire rule toward presenting the government as a legitimate Chinese dynasty. It also supported building institutions that looked more like earlier Chinese imperial administrations.
After a long siege, Yuan forces captured the key fortress city of Xiangyang. Controlling this area helped Yuan armies move more easily along major river routes and push deeper into Southern Song territory. The victory marked a major turning point toward the final conquest of the south.
Yuan forces, organized under Kublai Khan, launched a major seaborne attack on Japan in 1274. A powerful typhoon wrecked much of the fleet and forced the invaders to withdraw. The failure limited Yuan expansion overseas and pushed the dynasty into costly follow-up planning.
At the naval Battle of Yamen, Yuan forces defeated the last major Southern Song loyalist fleet. The Song court collapsed, and the Yuan effectively controlled all of China proper. This completed the Mongol conquest and set the stage for a unified Yuan administration over a vast population.
In 1281, the Yuan launched a larger two-pronged invasion of Japan. A major typhoon again destroyed many ships, and Japanese defenders prevented a lasting landing. The defeat became famous in Japan as the “kamikaze” (divine wind) and showed the limits of Yuan naval power.
Kublai Khan died after decades of rule that created the Yuan dynasty’s basic governing structure. After his death, later emperors faced problems of factional politics, heavy spending, and how to rule fairly across ethnic groups. These pressures gradually weakened central control.
A Roman Catholic archbishopric was established at Khanbaliq (Dadu/Beijing), linked to Franciscan missionary work in Yuan China. This reflected the Yuan period’s broad international connections along trade routes and the presence of foreign communities in the capital. It also shows how the Mongol-era empire enabled long-distance religious and diplomatic travel.
The Yuan court reintroduced a state examination system shaped by Neo-Confucian learning, a major tradition in Chinese government staffing. While quotas limited how many could pass and how much the exams mattered compared to appointments, the step signaled a renewed effort to use Chinese bureaucratic norms. This policy aimed to strengthen administration and legitimacy among Han Chinese elites.
Toghon Temür (also known as Shundi) became the last Yuan emperor while court politics and discrimination policies fueled unrest. According to later accounts, powerful ministers dominated key decisions, and governance struggled to address worsening economic and social conditions. These weaknesses made it harder for the dynasty to respond to disasters and rebellion.
Large state labor projects to control the Yellow River and restore canal transport placed heavy burdens on local communities. In 1351, widespread rebellion broke out, including the Red Turban movement, which combined religious and political opposition to Yuan rule. The uprising spread and became a key driver of the dynasty’s collapse.
Rebel leader Zhu Yuanzhang declared himself emperor, taking the reign title Hongwu and founding the Ming dynasty. His move reframed the rebellion as a new central government competing directly with the Yuan. From this base, Ming forces expanded their control northward.
Ming troops entered the Yuan capital Dadu (Beijing), and the Yuan emperor Toghon Temür fled to the steppe. This event is widely treated as the end of the Yuan dynasty’s rule over China proper, even though Mongol power continued in the north as the Northern Yuan. The transfer of the capital marked a clear political outcome: Ming rule replaced Yuan rule across the core empire.
Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368 CE)
