On the anniversary of the 1919 May Fourth Movement, students again rallied in Tiananmen Square, tying their demands to a well-known tradition of patriotic protest. On the night of June 3–4, troops and armored vehicles advanced into central Beijing and forcibly cleared Tiananmen Square. Many deaths occurred, with estimates varying widely, and the event became known internationally as the Tiananmen Square crackdown (or “massacre”). The government then arrested large numbers of suspected participants and tightened political control.
The day after the crackdown, an unidentified man stood in front of tanks on Chang’an Avenue and briefly stopped them. Photographs and video spread worldwide and became an enduring symbol of individual resistance. Inside China, the image and the underlying events have remained heavily censored.
Deng Xiaoping delivered a speech to senior martial law unit cadres, framing the crackdown as justified and reasserting top-level authority. The message helped signal that the leadership would not reverse course under domestic or foreign pressure. It also set the tone for a political tightening that followed.
Zhao Ziyang was removed from power and replaced as Communist Party general secretary by Jiang Zemin. The change formalized the victory of the hardline approach over Zhao’s more conciliatory stance. It also marked the beginning of a new leadership era shaped by the crackdown’s political aftermath.
Decades later, the Chinese government continues to restrict public commemoration and online discussion of the June 4, 1989 crackdown, using censorship and security measures to control the narrative.
